ESPN NFL insider Dan Graziano recently answered one salary cap question for all 32 teams, including the Jacksonville Jaguars.
The question at hand for Jacksonville was: What are the odds the Jaguars will cut Christian Kirk?
And Graziano believes that there’s a good chance of that happening.
“Pretty high; I’ll put it at 75%,” Graziano answered.
Graziano would go on to note that Kirk is in the final year of his deal and comes with a team-high salary cap hit of $24.08 million. He also mentions that injuries have limited Kirk to just 20 games over the last two seasons and that the Jaguars have a new coach, a new GM, and other options at receiver.
If the Jaguars were to move on from Kirk, they would free up $10.47 million in available cap space.
So sure, in that respect, on paper, you can see why this move would make some sense.
But not to be forgotten about is the rapport that Kirk has built with quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
In 2022, Kirk’s first season, he eclipsed 1,100 receiving yards. In 2023, despite playing in just 12 games, Kirk nearly totaled 800 receiving yards. This past season, Kirk was featured heavily, with 47 targets in only eight games.
As Liam Coen has discussed, the new Jacksonville offense is going to be built around the strengths of Lawrence and what he does best. Coen also added that Lawrence is going to have a say in the construction of the offense as well.
So perhaps, if Lawrence feels this offense needs Kirk in it, then that will carry more weight than the cap-savings that can be had by releasing him.
