PHOENIX — The Arizona Diamondbacks plan to start marquee free agent acquisition Corbin Burnes on the mound in Friday’s Cactus League opener against the Colorado Rockies, according to manager Torey Lovullo.
The game will start at 1:10 p.m. at Salt River Fields.
“I saw a rough draft of (the pitching plan) this morning. Corbin Burnes will start the first day,” Lovullo said at Cactus League Media Day on Tuesday. “He wants to go game one, inning one. That’s what he’s traditionally done.”
Burnes started the Baltimore Orioles’ spring training opener last season, as well.

The right-hander signed a six-year, $210 million deal with an opt-out after the second season, choosing to stay in the Valley where he resides with his young family.
A four-time All-Star and 2021 Cy Young award winner, Burnes brings a resume of consistent dominance to the top of Arizona’s rotation. Last year, Burnes made 32 starts with a 2.92 ERA in 194.1 innings.
Burnes arrived in camp early to get a feel for his new club and prepare for the season, and he detailed his process to get acclimated with his battery mates.
“First, just getting to know the guys a little bit … what makes them tick,” Burnes said when pitchers and catchers reported. “Some guys are kind of laid back and chill. Some guys have the high energy. So it’s just figuring out what it’s going to take to get on the same level as those guys.
“Then it’s just getting to know pitches and sequencing that kind of stuff. It’s easy to go watch film and see what a guy throws, but it’s different when you get back there and catch him. So we’ll get an opportunity to work a lot here in camp.”
Burnes will challenge for Arizona’s Opening Day start along with Zac Gallen, whose had the honors over the past couple seasons.
Jordan Montgomery update
Left-hander Jordan Montgomery’s spring training has been delayed by a strained left index finger. He will be re-examined on Wednesday, and the expectation is that he will begin an already mapped out throwing program shortly after.
Drey Jameson faces live hitters
For the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2023, right-hander Drey Jameson faced live hitters at Salt River Fields on Tuesday.
“(I heard it) was electric,” Lovullo said. “Drey is charging as hard as he can to show us he’s healthy. He wants to make the team, but I think there’s a process for Drey. We got to make sure that he’s okay, can recover and get back in and compete.”
It did not take long for Jameson to record his first K, as he started with a Jose Herrera ground ball before a swinging strikeout of Randal Grichuk:
