I’m not ashamed to say that I use AI platforms like ChatGPT everyday. It really does help my workflow be more efficient and It’s helped greatly by providing a single source for research materials. While it’s definitely infallible, it does give me a starting place when I have no idea where to start. The one downside to it is that I’m confined to one AI model by using ChatGPT. That is why FridayGPT was created. It gives macOS users a place to use AI systems without the restriction of only using one model. WIth FridayGPT, you can use OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, Ollama, LM Studio, or Together AI just by entering one of their API keys.

User Experience

The general setup of the app isn’t difficult, but you do have to find the right AI model that’s going to work best for you. The OpenAI model is probably the most well-known, but the others that are included are solid options as well. This step is really the only issue I had with the app. The Onboarding Guide and the YouTube setup guide don’t provide any guidance on which model to you. I started with OpenAI, but discovered that even though you don’t have to use the Pro version of the platform, you do have to pay for the API.

After trying Ollama and Anthropic, I settled on Groq’s model “llama3-70b-8192”. Since I frequently use ChatGPT through the web browser or Mac app, I decided to run a couple of queries through both platforms and see how the answers might differ.

Prompt #1: Write a short story about a Disney-like princess who saves a prince from an evil queen. The tone should be similar to a Hallmark Christmas Movie. It should be no longer than 250 words.

In this particular case it was interesting to see the similarities between the two stories as well as the format. I did note that FridayGPT seemed to be much quicker than ChatGPT did in finishing its draft.

Could not provide – “Incorrect API provided.”

This was a definite benefit of using ChatGPT natively instead of through Friday GPT because there was no API interference. ChatGPT was able to provide an answer quickly and easily because it didn’t have to pull it from another source. This type of interaction seems to be limited with FridayGPT because you have to have the correct API in order to get the right type of response. This is where it would be helpful to have guidance on which API to use for what purpose.

Conclusion

FridayGPT provides a versatile AI experience for macOS users by allowing access to multiple AI models through API integration. However, it does require users to select and configure their preferred AI model, which may involve additional costs or technical considerations.
