NCDOL fines Duke Energy after Charlotte workers electrocution death; blames improper equipment

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) -- Duke Energy Carolinas is being cited by the North Carolina Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Division after a 25-year-old worker's death last August.

On Aug. 14, 2024, 25-year-old Zachary Jones was electrocuted while working as a lineworker on Wandering Creek Drive. He passed away before he could be taken to a hospital.

“Our hearts go out to our teammate’s family and fellow coworkers,” Duke Energy officials said following the tragic incident. “We are currently investigating the incident to learn more and ask for privacy for the family at this time.”

NCDOL says Duke Energy failed to provide the right equipment to protect employees. Jones was reportedly using 11-inch-long low-voltage electrical gloves, leaving his wrist and forearm vulnerable.

NCDOL continues that mandating 14-inch-long low-voltage electrical gloves or gloves used with rubber sleeves could have prevented the Jones from being electrocuted. Duke Energy is ordered to pay a $16,131 penalty and correct the violation.

NCDOL says penalties do not make up for the loss of life but are collected for the Civil Penalty and Forfeiture Fund that allocates money to the public school system.

“I knew he had a family … I’m still trying to deal with it,” neighbor Latanyia Ledbetter told Queen City News last August with tears in her eyes. “No, I didn’t know him, but he was just a man doing his job, I hate that happened.”

The citation was issued on Feb. 4. Duke Energy must respond within 15 working days of the citation if the company wishes to contest. Queen City News has reached out to Duke Energy for a statement.
