Tyler McGhie scored 22 points Saturday as UC San Diego won their seventh straight, beating UC Davis 85-60.
McGhie added five assists for the Tritons (22-4, 12-2 Big West), for his 11th game with 20 points or more this season. He also was perfect from the free throw line.
Aniwaniwa Tait-Jones scored 16 points with six rebounds and six assists and Hayden Gray finished with 13 points, including going 3 for 6 from beyond the arc while adding four steals and a block,
“We took good shots and we were relatively efficient on the offensive side, then defensively it felt like we did a nice job of forcing some difficult shots, mostly trying to protect the pain,” said head coach Eric Olen. “They put a lot of pressure on the rim with their guards and their physicality and how they drive … We were able to separate early, then hold on.”
UCSD, with a 7-4 lead early, capitalized on UC Davis mistakes, going on a 6-0 run capped off by a Justin Rochelin alley-oop to put the Tritons up 15-9. They were raining down trees by the midpoint, led by Gray’s trio of perimeter shots. Nordin Kapic and Aiden Burke’s threes established a double-digit lead that the team extended thanks to more treys, from Rochelin and McGhie, leading to a 52-31 advantage at the half.
The Aggies kicked off the second half with a 6-0 run before Chris Howell drilled a three. McGhie caught fire soon after with consecutive deep threes and discipline from the free throw line, cushioning a 64-39 Triton lead.
The defense dialed in as well, forcing four Aggie turnovers to go with a four-minute scoring drought.
UCSD mixed it up with a few layups before going back to the perimeter to finish the game. UC Davis continued to push, going 5-for-5 to prompt a timeout with the Tritons up 76-59. Ryder Elisaldez went coast-to-coast for a layup in the final minute to cap off the win.
UC San Diego is now 18-0 when leading at halftime; it is also the third time this season the team has led a Big West game by 20 or more at halftime.
The Aggies (15-11, 9-6 Big West), who saw their three-game win streak snapped, were led in scoring by Ty Johnson, who finished with 14 points and two steals.
UCSD visits Cal Poly at 7 p.m. Thursday.
