FOUNTAIN VALLEY – Fountain Valley captured a third straight CIF Southern Section wrestling championship Saturday by winning the Coastal Division title at Fountain Valley High.
Barons wrestlers won nine of the 13 weight classes: Chris Qureshi at 106 pounds; Hunter Jauregui, 113 pounds; Liam Qureshi, 120 pounds; Brady Mercer, 132 pounds; Niko Valenzuela, 150 pounds; Mikel David Uyemura, 157 pounds; Christian Stoeber, 165 pounds; Rocky Windrath, 175 pounds; and Primo Catalano, 190 pounds.
Fountain Valley totaled 372 points. Mayfair was second at 233.5 points. Newport Harbor finished third with 145.5 and Los Alamitos was 10th at 94 points.
The one real negative outcome of the day for the Barons happened in the 215 pounds final in which Fountain Valley senior Khale McDonnell was the favorite.
McDonnell went into the meet as the No. 2-ranked wrestler in the state at his weight class, and he had defeated his finals opponent Kaydee Cartee, a Mayfair senior, twice this season including in the Five Counties meet at Fountain Valley last month. But Cartee pinned McDonnell at 3:32 for the win and the division title.
Newport Harbor senior Demian Priyma was the only non-Fountain Valley champion from an Orange County school. Priyma won at 144 pounds.
Pryima was pleased on a personal level for winning his second CIF-SS championship but disappointed by Newport’s third-place finish.
“A great day today, obviously,” Pryima said. “As team, I didn’t think we wrestled our best. We’re better than what we showed.”
Valenzuela is a senior who transferred to Fountain Valley from Calvary Chapel where he finished second in last year’s CIF-SS Eastern Conference finals. He enjoyed his time wrestling at Calvary Chapel, which like Fountain Valley has a long history of wrestling success. Valenzuela is happy he made the move.
“To be part of this program, there’s a lot of hard work that goes into it,” he said. “We push each other to be the best every day.”
Jaurequi, a junior, won his second straight CIF-SS championship.
“My game plan was to do what I do every day,” he said. “I believe in myself and believe in my training, and I got it done.”
Windrath was the other repeat CIF-SS champion for Fountain Valley on Saturday.
The top five placers at CIF-SS divisional championships advance to the CIF-SS Masters Meet. The CIF-SS Masters Meet is Saturday (Feb. 22) at Sonora. The top 10 placers at the CIF-SS Masters Meet qualify for the CIF State Wrestling Championships, Feb. 27-March 1 at Bakersfield.
