So much for being laid off with dignity.
National Parks Traveler on Saturday reported that 1,000 probationary employees who were fired this week by the National Park Service and Interior Department received a “terse” form email claiming they were being let go for cause.
The layoffs were part of a continuing blitzkrieg effort by the Trump administration to trim the federal work force.
Meanwhile, affected employees are speaking out on a Reddit page for park rangers.
The top post reads, in part: “I know I’m one of so so many, but I got the termination today. I started my dream job about a month ago, and it feels like everything I’ve worked for has been viciously ripped from me with no remorse.”

A reply to that post: “Same. The added insult is that their justification was that ‘I did not demonstrate fitness or qualification because my expertise, knowledge and skills did not meet their needs,’ which is a blatant lie.
“I did not even have my first evaluation at this location, and my previous decade of work/evaluations for public lands agencies demonstrate the opposite.”
An Interpretive Ranger who survived the layoffs wrote: “I feel for all those who were illegally fired today. I am a probationary employee who was retained due to my disabled veteran status. That is the only justification given for my retention. This doesn’t inspire confidence that I will be retained in the future.”
It’s likely that lawsuits will be filed against the Trump administration on behalf of the terminated probationary employees, who generally boasted 1-2 years of experience with no job protections.
It remains unclear how the layoffs will affect operations at national parks during peak spring and summer seasons. If there’s a silver lining, it’s that the Park Service has been told it can hire 5,000 seasonal employees.
If this proves to be true it represents a reversal, considering that many seasonal employees were told recently that their summer jobs had been canceled.
