A Ukiah family was displaced on Valentine’s Day after a fire in their wood stove spread to the walls of their home early Friday morning, the Ukiah Valley Fire Authority reported.
“The chimney was clogged, trapping the excess heat and catching nearby combustibles on fire,” said UVFA Battalion Chief Justin Buckingham, explaining that a chimney is designed to allow much of the heat generated by the flames in a fireplace or wood stove to escape a home and be released safely outside.
However, when a chimney is clogged by materials, Buckingham said “the hot fire gases have nowhere to go, then a large amount of excess heat builds up” that can quickly catch nearby materials on fire, in this case the wood walls.
Given how many people are heating their homes right now during the cold and wet winter months, Buckingham urged all residents to “make sure you get your chimneys cleaned by a professional chimney sweep,” and to keep as much combustibles away from the fireplace and wood stove as possible.
UVFA crews were dispatched to the fire in the 2400 block of South State Street around 6:25 a.m. Feb. 14, and “had to remove a lot of the wooden structure near the stove to make sure the fire was completely out.” As a result, Buckingham said the family was displaced and the local chapter of the American Red Cross was called to assist them.
Buckingham also urged residents to make sure “you have house numbers that are visible from the street,” as that helps all first responders locate you during an emergency.
There were no injuries reported in the fire Friday, in which the UVFA was assisted by Hopland Fire and Cal Fire.
Before the fire, Buckingham said UVFA crews had many medical calls overnight, and were also dispatched to a mudslide on Highway 253, assisting on scene while Caltrans crews responded.
