Hmm, The Padres Are Signing Yet Another Starting Pitcher in Kyle Hart

Although he hadn’t gotten a ton of attention in the mix of other available starting pitchers, I was curious to see where lefty Kyle Hart would wind up. If you don’t even recognize the name, that’s because he’s this year’s guy coming back from Korea. Those KBO pitchers don’t always get a ton of attention, and they are rare to work out – though we don’t have to look back too far to find a success story in Erick Fedde, who was fantastic last year in his return season, split between the White Sox and Cardinals.

Anyway, Hart, a former long-time Red Sox prospect, was getting even less attention than Fedde was, and he just signed under the radar with the Padres:

Hart gets $1 million in 2025 with a $5 million club option for 2026 ($500K buyout), source says. 2026 salary can reach $7.5 million based on escalators for games started. t.co/dlQMh0bbf3

Obviously that’s a very modest deal for the 32-year-old, who never actually appeared in MLB before heading to the KBO last year and dominating to the tune of a 2.69 ERA over 157.0 innings. Clearly there was less confidence that his performance there would translate back in the States.

In any case, wondering where Hart would land was merely a curiosity. What is actually potentially MEANINGFUL about this move is that it is the second starting pitcher added by the Padres in less than 24 hours, following last night’s Nick Pivetta deal. That could give the Padres more starting pitchers than a five-man rotation can hold, which wouldn’t normally make you think much of anything – teams overload on starters this time of year constantly – but we’re talking about an organization that reportedly had to cut costs, and currently stands well over the luxury tax. They’ve done no cost-cutting yet. Only adding.

So, then, you can’t help but wonder whether Pivetta and Hart were precursor deals to the Padres sending out Dylan Cease or Michael King (less so King because the structure of his deal doesn’t cost much in 2025) in a trade that saves some money and restocks them elsewhere. Even if not a direct precursor, the signings probably do put the Padres on more of a comfortable spot to make a move if the right offer comes along.

There were rumors for a minute that the Cubs were hot on Cease, though we haven’t heard much of that in the last couple weeks, as Alex Bregman took center stage. Now that Bregman has signed, and now that the Padres have added two other starting pitchers, will we see those Cease rumors pick back up?
