San Clemente’s girls water polo team trained twice a day during the Thanksgiving and Christmas “breaks” to prepare for challenges like it faced at Beckman on Wednesday.
On a drizzly night before a boisterous crowd featuring age-group boys from the local Patriot Aquatics club, the Tritons went into overtime with their South Coast League co-champion in the CIF-SS Division 1 quarterfinals.
San Clemente shifted into its next gear to advance.
Attacker Emmi Franklin drew a penalty on a counterattack that led to the go-ahead goal and Adley Dawson followed with a perimeter strike as the Tritons edged Beckman 8-7 in front of enthusiastic audience for both teams.

Expand“Our conditioning helped us tremendously,” San Clemente captain Phoebe DeMoss said. “We knew (the training) would (helps us) be successful in the future. (We) put in the work early on to have the results in the end. We want that (CIF) ring.”
San Clemente (21-8) moved one step closer to that goal by reaching the semifinals against visiting Alta Loma on Feb. 18.
“It’s humongous,” Tritons coach Logan Powell said of defeating Beckman for the third time in four meetings this season. “Both of our CIF games, we’ve had a lot of adversity. We were down to Sunny Hills for three quarters (and won 7-4) and this one overtime.”
“I think it’s great playoff experience,” the coach added. “We’re in a good spot.”
The margin of victory against Beckman, however, was tight.
After regulation ended in a 6-6 tie, the teams played the first half of the first three-minute overtime without a goal.
The Tritons then pounced after a perimeter shot by Beckman blasted off a post and led to a counterattack. Franklin, a junior, popped open on the weakside of the counterattack and drew the penalty in front of the net. Freshman Sabrina Pearson made the shot to give San Clemente a 7-6 lead.
Moments later, the Tritons converted a power play as a patient Pearson fed Dawson, a sophomore, at the top of the perimeter for a strike and an 8-6 advantage.
Beckman senior Hailey Goodwin answered with a perimeter strike with 1:15 left in second three-minute period but the Tritons held on to reach their second consecutive Division 1 semifinal.
The match featured five ties between the South Coast League foes, who split two league matches.
DeMoss, a senior committed to UC Santa Barbara, led five Tritons in scoring with three goals and added four steals.
San Clemente finished 3 for 8 on the power play.
Beckman center Brooke Knisely beat a double team to tie the score 6-6 with 3:20 left in regulation. The junior finished with three goals.
“Brooke is a monster,” Beckman coach Duje Grubisic said. “I told the girls they left everything in that pool. They fought their hearts out.”
Beckman finished 0 for 5 with extra attacker.
In goal, San Clemente sophomore Tera Lindberg and Beckman freshman Allyson Lu each made eight saves.
Also in Division 2:
Laguna Beach 11, Harvard-Westlake 7: Kara Carver tied the school single-match record with seven assists to lead the visiting Breakers (18-11), who play host to Dos Pueblos in the semifinals. Dos Pueblos edges JSerra 8-7 in another quarterfinal.
In the Open Division:
Orange Lutheran 16, Long Beach Wilson 8: Allison Cohen and Jailynn Robinson combined for nine goals and Kyla Pranajaya made 16 saves for the No. 2 seeded Lancers (23-3). The two-time defending Open champion plays Newport Harbor in the semifinals Feb. 18 at Orange Coast College.
Newport Harbor 10, Foothill 7: Sophomore Gabby Alexson netted three goals and drew four exclusions and Lydia Soderberg made eight saves to lead the Sailors (23-5).
Mater Dei 15, San Marcos 8: Kirra Pantaleon and Maggie Ryan each scored five goals and Sienna Sorensen added eight saves to lead the top-seeded Monarchs (23-3), who play host to Oaks Christian in the semifinals. The Lions defeated Corona del Mar 11-9 in another match.
More results to come.
