The 30+ Best Pet Products, According to Parade Editors and Vets

Parade aims to feature only the best products and services. If you buy something via one of our links, we may earn a commission.

Listen, Charlie Brown loved Snoopy—we have no doubt about that. However, the famous Beagle slept in a dog house. It didn't seem to bug or hold him back—the so-cool guy has stood the test of time (ditto for his balloon in the Macy's parade).

Yet, times have changed. As people have begun to consider dogs more like family (and four-legged children), pets have moved on up (and in). These days, the pups who don't hog all the sheets in our beds enjoy sweet slumber in cushy sleep spaces. Cats have luxury condos that would make a real estate agent swoon. Pet parents (for dogs, cats and both) also find themselves scrolling through and looking for the best diets, treats, and accessories to calm their poor pets down when their work arrangements shift from "hybrid" to "five days in the office." Toys? A tennis ball or ball of yarn won't cut it.

The market has responded to the moment, but it's gotten more crowded than the neighborhood fire hydrant on a warm day. It can overwhelm caretakers who only want the best for their pets.

We see you. We are you. We want to help you. The Parade offices are full of animal lovers who peruse various markets late at night like you. We've hand-tested several products with our own pets and had our share of misses and hits. The Best in Show Awards is a comprehensive guide to our greatest hits, (and our pets agree). These 30+ pet products are our top dogs and cat's meows.

How We Tested These Pet Products

Reading reviews is one way to make informed decisions. However, at Parade, we don't think anything compares to hand-testing products. As pet parents ourselves, we know how important it is to find products we feel comfortable using with our fur babies. Our team of writers, veterinarians, and pet behavior experts deep-dove into each product to bring you first-person (and first-pet) accounts of how each one stood up against the competition.

The results are in. The "Best in Show" represents a product that stands out for performance, safety and user experience. You can trust that anything with a "Best in Show" rating works, lasts, and is something your pets will love (almost) as much as they love you.

    Pet Home Essentials

You know the meme about how if you want to live with a box of poop, get a cat? Yeah. It doesn't have to be that bad—nor does the inevitable pet hair on your floors and sofa—with these litter, vacuum and other home must-haves.

    Best Kitty Litter: Tidy Cats

    Purina

Tidy Cats—and Purina, more generally—have Google-like reputations in the cat and dog world, and those reputations are earned. "As a house with four cats, the Tidy Cats Litter is the only brand we buy. It's great at blocking smells, is gentle on our cats' feet, and you don't need to be a bodybuilder to lift and pour," raves Devan McGuinness, a ParadePets writer. Tidy Cats credits its 21-day odor-controlling prowess to an ammonia blocker, and the light, tight clumps make the undesirable chore of scooping the litter painless.

Best Smart Kitty Litter: Tidy Cats Smart Litter System

    Purina

Like we said: Tidy Cats= Google-esque. Eve Vawter, a writer for ParadePets, has two and will never go back to a regular litter system. "I can't believe I ever used a traditional litter box before," Vawter raves. "My cats never track litter out of the box, and there's no litter dust on my floor. The pads for their urine are super absorbent, so there's no foul urine smell, and it's so easy to scoop." The starter set comes with the whole kit and caboodle, including a box with the scoop, four moisture-locking cat pads, and 3.5-pound litter pellets (one month of refills.)

Best Odor-Blocking Litter: Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Litter

    Arm & Hammer

The Arm & Hammer Super Scoop Litter also has hero status in our orbit. Its moisture-locking clay is absorbent, and hard clumps make scooping easier. "This is the only littler I used for my precious, late cat, Sammi," Mary Hawkins, Deputy Editor for ParadePets, says. "The baking soda blocks the odor, and it clumps and scoops like a charm." The nose will also note that Army & Hammer's Super Scoop Litter is fragrance-free, earning it points with kitties and parents with sensitivities. It's low-tracking, so you can wave goodbye to tracking and dust, helping you keep a cleaner home.

Best Smart Litter Box: Litter Genie

    litter genie

Litter boxes have—mercifully—advanced in recent years. New ones fit the "smart box" mold. Think of the Litter Genie as you would a diaper genie for a baby—sans diapers because cats. "The Litter Genie is so easy to use," raves Vawter. Easy as 1-2-3, to be precise. Scoop the litter, drop it into the genie, and lock it. Built-in antimicrobial will guard against bacteria growth, and a multi-layer film seals in odor for two weeks longer than the standard pail. "It keeps my litter boxes pristine, which I'm sure my fur babies appreciate, and just makes the entire process more sanitary," Vawter says. Honestly? Your home will smell so empty that you might forget you have a cat.

Best Calming Dog Bed: FurHaven Calming Cuddler

    FurHaven

This deep-bolstered bed boasts a donut shape and feels just as deliciously comforting to stressed-out dogs. The 360-degree walls feel nest-like, and the spacious bed (a jumbo is 45 x 45 x 9 inches) leaves plenty of room to spread out. The plush vegan faux fur and recycled poly-fiber filling will make eco-minded pet parents feel just as good about the pick—ditto for the convenient machine-washable design. "I wish my dog didn't outgrow this bed after her puppy phase because she truly loved it," says Parade's Executive Lifestyle Editor, Meghann Foye. "She was crate-averse, so this functioned as her daily safe space. It also looked great and matched my decor, too." (It now comes in three sizes: Small through jumbo.)

Best Upright Vacuum for Pet Hair: Miele

    miele dog cat vacuum

Vawter played this one straight. "If you're serious about keeping your home fur-free, you need a Miele," she says. "I basically love my Miele like it's one of my fur babies." Vawter raves that her Miele keeps her hardwood floors and carpeting pristine and is lightweight enough to lug around without feeling like she's getting a bonus workout. It's also a dream to store. "It has a really cool power cord rewind that you step on the vacuum, and it disappears into the unit," she says. Bells and whistles include upholstery and crevice nozzles and dust brushes that work like "no one's business."

Pet Carpet Cleaner: Hoover SmartWash Pet

    Hoover

An un-housebroken puppy was no match for Hoover's SmartWash Pet Automatic Carpet Cleaner Machine automatic cleaning technology in Parade Home & Garden Deputy Editor, Kaitlin Madden's, home. The fast-motion sensing design (complete with auto-mix and dry cleaning) made potty training cleanup easier than the housebreaking process. Eventually, the pup learned where to use the facilities. However, the Hoover remains like a trusted friend. "It's actually gross how much of our Lab's hair this carpet cleaner removes from our carpets, but at the same time, so satisfying," Madden says.

Best Cat Tree: Mau Ivy 3

    Mau

Let's be honest: Cat trees can be a massive eye-sore. The Mau Ivy 3? Someone call MoMA. "The Mau Ivy 3 is like a gorgeous piece of modern art that your cats sleep, scratch and play on," Vawter says. "It fits beautifully with my decor... people always comment on it when they visit, plus the cats are absolutely crazy about it." Like her cats, Vawter adores the "plush and cozy cushions" in the woven-basket beds/perches (Bonus: They're machine washable, and all parts are replaceable—a win for caretakers to feisty felines.) The bevy of play spaces makes it fit for a single queen or multiple kitties in a home.

    A cat behavioral expert agrees.

"For the discerning cat parent with the need for aesthetic appeal, this is the best-looking cat tree," says Mieshelle Nagelschneider, a certified cat behaviorist and the owner of The Cat Behavior Clinic.

The appeal does more than win compliments from company. "Cats love getting into boxes to feel safe and enclosed," Nagelschneider says. "These baskets are just as attractive."

Best Dishwasher With a Pet Cycle: Maytag Dishwasher with Pet Pro Sanitization Cycle

    Maytag

Pet parents know just how important it is to wash your dog or cat's food and water bowls each day to keep harmful bacteria at bay. But even when you wash them with hot, soapy water, there's the potential for germs to get left behind. Don't worry, there's a dishwasher for that. Maytag's special dishwasher with a third-rack pet sanitization cycle kills 99.99% of bacteria, and it also breaks down dried-on food and grime. Hawkins recently had one installed in her home and says, "This dishwasher is an absolute game-changer! Not only do I rest easy knowing my Shih-Tzu's bowls are squeaky clean and germ-free, but the washer leaves the rest of my dishes sparkly-shiny as well. As a bonus, its sleek, stainless steel finish fits in perfectly with my other kitchen appliances.

    Pet Wellness

Pet parents are focused on ensuring their furry friends are safe and comfortable, even from afar. From cameras that let you monitor Fido or Kitty from the office to products that help paws withstand anything Mother Nature throws at them, these wellness products help pets live their best lives.

    Best Pet Home Camera: Furbo

    furbo

PetHelpful writer Gabrielle LaFrank says Furbo checks all the boxes and earned extra credit with its 360° camera. Rotating stand? Check. You can see your fur baby from any angle of the house while you're out. Miss a minute? You'll know who stole the cookies from the cookie jar—this camera keeps receipts. "The camera automatically saves video clips when it detects movement, so you can always go back and see what your pup or kitty has been up to," LaFrank says. Keep them from your cookie jar with this genius trick: "Not only can you toss them a treat from your phone or speak to them through the camera's speaker, but the new Furbo Nanny feature also plays calming music to stop barking," LaFrank says.

Best Budget-Friendly Pet Home Camera: Kasa Indoor Pan

    Amazon

If a camera isn't something you want to splurge on, Parade's Senior Video Producer, Kelsey Barberio, says Kasa's Indoor Pan is a worthy choice. "This camera does everything you need it to and is under $25," Barberio says. "You can watch your pet from afar, move the camera around remotely and speak through the camera." (Speaking of tricks, Barberio has used it to spook her fiance on more than one occasion.)

Best Pet Recovery Suit for Spay/Neuter: Kuoser Recovery Suit

    Amazon

The cone of shame almost adds insult to injury for a pet recovering from surgery, like spay or neutering. Kuoser's soft, breathable suit provides a plusher alternative. "10/10 recommend grabbing a recovery suit for your pets to wear post-surgery.," Barberio says. "It's comfy and cozy—think pajamas for your little guy or girl—and does the work of keeping them away from their incisions." It scores extra points for the multiple sizes and prints, like stripes, camo and boats/planes.

Best Pet Collar for Spay/Neuter: Grand Line Donut Inflatable Collar for Dogs and Cats

    Amazon

Listen, Barberio isn't here for the cones, OK? "Let's face it, those hard plastic cones are archaic," Barberio says. "If your pet is getting spayed or neutered, be sure to snag a pet donut. I loved this one because, well, it does look like a donut, but the best part was that my puppy didn't mind it at all." It also paired perfectly with the aforementioned recovery suit (truly, donuts pair perfectly with anything, so it's unsurprising.).

Best Pet Paw Balm: Musher's Secret

    Musher's Secret

Dr. Rhiannon Koehler, DVM, MPH, a veterinarian expert at TeachMe.To, is a fan of Musher's non-toxic formula. The food-grade ingredients make it safe to lick, which dogs often do. Dr. Koehler adds that it's water-resistant, easy to apply, and has an indefinite shelf life. Still, it may require additional applications in the snow, and licking post-application can lower effectiveness. "Please note that while it can help protect paw pads, it's not a guarantee," Dr. Koehler says.

Best Pet Protective Paw-wear: Wagwear Wag Wellies

    Wagwear

Crocs for dogs? Yes, please. But these beauties (which come in numerous statement-making colors like neon green and hot pink) are more than a somewhat silly, totally cool-looking piece of footwear. They're as functional as they are fashionable. "I love them because they keep Gambit's paws protected in any weather, and the Croc-like holes in the shoe give him great ventilation for the warmer months," Parade's Senior Food Editor, Ni'Kesia Pannell, says. Made for any paws, the sizes range from XXXS to XXXL.

Best Cat Exercise Wheel: One Fast Cat

    Amazon

Wheels aren't just for hamsters—and the discussion around exercise isn't just for large dogs. Indoor cats need physical activity to stay fit and bust boredom, which can lead to destructive habits. One Fast Cat's exercise wheel boasts durable felt pads that withstand days of play, claw marks and scratches, all while providing traction for your cat. "I was gifted a cat wheel and was unsure how much cats would use it," says Parade's Social Media Director Devon Sherer. "One basically scoffed at the idea, but the other, a Tuxedo cat, went crazy for it. He was a younger cat and needed to get some energy out in our apartment, and this was perfect."

Best Dog Chews for Healthy Teeth: Earth Animal

    Amazon

Barberio specifically adores the no-hide small, long-lasting dog chew rolls made with grass-fed beef (or, at least, her dog does). "My puppy, Fig, loves them," Barberio says. "They're free from rawhide and all of those nasty chemicals but still last like a bone would. We actually have to take the chews away because he won't stop gnawing at them—he loves them that much." Other flavors include pork and peanut butter, should you want to let your dog taste test.

Best Dental Treats for Dogs: Greenies

    Greenies

A long-standing, vet-recommended dental treat, Greenies got high marks from multiple judges. "My wiggly, wriggly mini Aussie isn't the most patient when it comes to regular dental care," says Parade Chief Content Officer, Lisa Delaney. "While I still brush her several times a week, Greenies lets me fill in the gaps with no hassle. The best thing is that she has no idea that they're good for her."

Dr. Koehler would give Delaney a pat on the back if they were in a room together. "Please note that dental treats are not a replacement for regular tooth brushing," she says. However, Dr. Koehler also likes that Greenies are accepted by the Veterinary Oral Health Council (VOHC), can reduce plaque and tartar if given regularly, are a flexible chew and come in numerous sizes and flavors.

    Pet Food and Treats

Dental treats are swell and all, but what about training (and just because) treats? There's also the need to find food that your furry friend's tastebuds and tummy love. With so much noise out there about what a pet "should" eat, it can feel like you've bitten off more than you could chew by going down the rabbit hole. Allow us and vet experts to pull you out.

Best Raw Cat Treats: Vital Essentials

    vital essentials

Cats can be rather opinionated—often bluntly telling you they disapprove. So, if they love something, you know it's good. Such is the case with Vital Essentials Minnows Freeze-Dried Raw Cat Treats in the Sherer household. "My cats love these and go nuts when I bring out the bag," Sherer says. "I feel good giving them real-looking food." the recipe uses single-source protein and skips no added hormones, antibiotics, fillers, grain, gluten or flavorings. It also mixes in some fun. "My cat Jello likes to 'kill' her by batting it around a bit before eating," she says. Cats will be cats.

Best Puppy Food: Fromm Puppy Gold

    Amazon

The pink and gold packaging is enough to put any pet parent in a happy state of mind. The real treat? Watching a puppy gobble it up and grow.

"My puppy, Fig, absolutely loves this food," Barberio says. "It's made up of great ingredients and gives him the absolute glossiest coat—so much so that multiple vet techs have asked what we feed him because his fur is so shiny and soft." Duck, chicken, barley and brown rice are among the ingredients. Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, DVM, a veterinary medical advisor for Rover, gives the grain a thumbs up. Dr. Greenstein also loves that it's puppy-specific. She adds that you'll want to ensure the food is best for your puppy's size, age and breed. Always speak to your dog's vet for personalized feeding advice.

Best Dog Food for Sensitive Pups: Blue Buffalo Skin & Stomach Care

    Chewy

If you look at the label, you'll see that turkey is the first ingredient in Blue Buffalo's Skin & Stomach Care. This limited-ingredient recipe, packed with omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, is good for skin, coat and digestion, including for medically compromised pets.

"My little senior Shih-Tzu has a history of pancreatitis, so I have to be very careful about what I feed him," Hawkins says. "He's eaten this food since he was a puppy, and it's continued to be sensitive enough on his system to where he doesn't have tummy issues after eating it. He loves the turkey and potato flavor."

Dr. Teresa Manucy, DVM, of Chewy, also likes that pet parents can find it in canned or dry food at various life stages. Your pup can continue eating it throughout their lives, so you won't have to deal with the hassle of switching foods. Also, the limited ingredients in the recipe don't mean the nutrients are lacking. In fact, Dr. Manucy points out that Blue Buffalo Skin & Stomach Care meets AAFCO certification standards, meaning it meets nutritional and ingredient guidelines set to help dogs thrive.

Best Training Treats for Dogs: Milk Bone Trail Mix

    Milk Bone

Who's a good dog? A pup who gets one of these treats made with real meat and sweet potatoes. "My mini Aussie Nillie is a bit reactive when she's on the leash," Delaney says. "This mix of mini-Milk Bones and chewy sweet potato and beef nuggets are just the right size for a training treat. She'll sit and stay for these little nibbles even when the biggest pup walks by." Chewy and crunchy textures also add interest.

Dr. Liza Cahn, DVM, a veterinary consultant for Embrace Pet Insurance, suggests pet parents use lower-calorie options or treats that can be broken into smaller pieces. While she didn't specifically endorse Milk Bone's Trail Mix, it fits that mold.

Best Treats for Small Dogs: Trader Joe's Peanut Butter & Banana Biscuits

Trader Joe's holy grail products aren't limited to pot stickers for humans. "My little Shih-Tzu has a sensitive system, and these are the only treats he can tolerate," Hawkins says. "He loves the flavor, plus, they're ideal for small pups."

Best Treats for Healthy Skin: Polka Dog

    Polka Dog

Looking at the ingredient list for these pup novelties is a treat for discerning pet parents. "I love that they're single ingredient, include Omega-3s for healthy skin and coat, and are made from the highest quality sources near me in Boston," Foye says. Foye is a loving pet parent and has high standards. However, her Aussiedoodle is the tougher critic of the two. Lucky for us, the pup also weighed in. "My Aussiedoodle has a classic 'Doodle stomach' and turns down a lot of treats, especially if they contain filler ingredients," Foye says. "She loves Polkadog Cod Skin Treats."

    Best Calming Treats: Pet Parents

    Pet Parents

Pet Parents' Calming SoftSupps supplements use L-Theanine to promote relaxation without drowsiness. Other ingredients include organic hemp extract, organic chamomile and valerian root, all to lower stress and anxiety. While Dr. Cahn wouldn't endorse any products, she did say supplements can be helpful. "Supplements can be beneficial in helping to manage many medical conditions, ranging from arthritis to anxiety," Dr. Cahn says. "It’s always best to consult your vet before adding any supplement to your dog’s diet, as some ingredients may not be safe for certain dogs."

Best Treat Dispensers: Woof Pet Pupsicle

    Woof

The small but mightily durable Pupsicles are a runaway favorite among the Parade team. They're user-friendly (just open in the middle to clean, fill and reuse) and keep pets occupied for 15+ minutes, so you can shower with the door closed (IYKYK).

"I'm always on the lookout for the best enrichments for my Aussiedoodle, and Woof's 'Pupsicle' is my hands-down favorite," Foye says. "I use both the peanut butter flavored balls and make my own bone-broth 'pupsicles.' When I give it to her to lick, she's happy for 15 minutes or more. When she was a puppy, this thing saved me."

    Vawter 20/10 agrees.

"I second the Pupsicle," Vawter says. "I love it so much, I have bought them as gifts for my friends and relatives who have dogs."

Best Treat Puzzle for Dogs: PETSTA

    Amazon

For some dogs, it's about the love of the chase. They can get that indoors with treat dispensers. Amazon-brand PETSTA's funky slow feeder (which works on dogs and cats) does just the trick. Let your pets use their naturally refined sense of smell and paw skills to find food, keeping them engaged and away from destroying your home. "My puppy is obsessed with this puzzle," Madden says. "You hide treats inside, and they have to slide the levers around until they find them. She gets excited every time I get it out. It's like a little boredom buster for dogs."

    Pet Parent Solutions

Pet parents can be everything to their furry friends. However, there's a product for everything these days, and it's not always a good thing. The best products will fill holes and help solve pain points, like reducing skin allergy flare-ups, finding ninja-like dogs on a large property and giving the whole family peace of mind.

Best Detergent for Pets: Molly's Suds

    Molly's Suds

Just like not all products need to be explicitly marked "baby" for human newborns, not all pet solutions need to be especially for furry friends. Detergent is one of those categories. ParadePets writer Mandi Jacewicz swears by Molly's Suds for her rescue dog with severe skin allergies. Molly's Suds detergent is made using a short list of simple ingredients like water and glycerin and without chemicals. Jacewicz and her pet aren't missing those chemicals — Molly's Suds does the trick. "It works beautifully removing dirt and odors without any harsh ingredients," she raves.

    Best Pet Tracker System: HALO

    Halo

After considering a traditional fence for her chocolate lab puppy, Madden and her family opted for the Halo by Protect Animals GPS Dog Collars and Wireless Virtual Fence. The latest model uses dual-frequency GPS to provide the most accurate locations, even with urban obstacles or poor signals. "I love that I can track my dog's location on the app and that we can take the whole system with us when we travel or when we leave our dog with relatives while we're away," Madden says. "It's also super easy to set up, and we love the training tips that come with it." Bonus: 30+ hours of battery life.

    Leash | Collar)

    Amazon

Like the Wellies Pannell adores, the Tuff Pupper is as useful as it is stylish.

"This is by far our favorite leash and collar combo," Pannell says. "Not only are they stylish, but they don't absorb any odors, are extremely durable, 100% waterproof and look way more expensive than they are. We get so many compliments when Gambit wears these, and we have a variety of colors."

    Best Pet Travel System: TAVO

    tavo

Consider the TAVO the UppaBaby of pet travel systems. The 3-in-1 system includes a carrier bed, a stroller that's far more stylish than most of the ones for tiny humans and a safety-tested base for use in vehicles.

"It's a game-changer," raves Hawkins. "I have the TAVO Maeve travel system, and it gives me so much peace of mind knowing that my little Shih-Tzu is safe and sound whenever we're in the car. Plus, there's an optional stroller conversion, which makes it ideal for taking your pup on the go when their little legs get too tired."

Best Pet Carrier: Sherpa Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack

    Petco

Dogs don't get to have all the fun. Celebs, including Taylor Swift, have been spotted toting their feline friends in a backpack. Sherer also puts her kitties on her back using the Sherer Sherpa Bubble Cat Carrier Backpack. "I've brought my cat on trips in this bag from boats to walking down the street, and we love it," Sherer says. "It's easy to load them in, and people get a kick from doing a double take once they realize it's not an ordinary backpack. Plus, Taylor Swift has one just like it."

Of course, cats may not find getting toted around a laughing matter. However, Sherer says the backpack is steadier than a regular carrier, so her kitties don't get jostled around too much. She suggests shelling out the $80 for a Sherpa, though. "If you decide to get one just like this, ensure it has breathing holes in the dome," Sherer says, "Some knock-off brands can be dangerous.

    Subscription Services

"Cancel your subscription services" is sort of the new "skip the daily latte" in the budgeting world. However, these subscription services are ones you'll want to keep around for your furry friends.

Best Dog Sound Machine: Hatch Restore/Hatch+

    Hatch

Hatch noise machines and alarm clocks have long been favorites for helping human babies and adults fall into sweet slumber and gently rise. An underrated fact is that there's a dog channel.

"I've been using my Hatch Restore device for nearly a year now, specifically The Dog Channel option that's included with the Hatch+ subscription," says ParadePets writer Allison Blair. "It comes with dozens of dog-friendly sounds and light combinations to choose from and has genuinely changed the game in helping my 1.5-year-old Boston Terrier relax and rest through the night."

Actually, everyone in the Blair household is sleeping better these days. "Not only does it block out noises that make her anxious, but it also helps me block out the sound of her snoring," Blair says.

Best Dog Toy Subscription Service: BarkBox

    Bark Box

Kids have Kiwi Co. or Lovevery. Busy grown-ups have various meal delivery services. Dogs? They have BarkBox. LaFrank recently signed her pets up and has become a fast fan.

"I was immediately impressed by the high quality and durability of the dog toys we received," LaFrank says. "My destructo-dogs still haven't de-stuffed either of them! We were able to add several new dog treats to our pup's repertoires, too."

Tails wag on monthly delivery days.

"My favorite thing about BarkBoxes is how excited my dogs are to see them at the door," LaFrank says. "I have no idea how they know what's in the box or that it's for them, but they know every single time."
