The San Diego Foundation was awarded the 2025 TRUST Award for Excellence in Philanthropy by the Nonprofit Institute at the University of San Diego, in recognition of the foundation’s commitment to effective governance and lasting social impact.
As the largest regional community foundation in San Diego, SDF serves the area by providing grants to local non-profits.
The TRUST award honors foundation boards that demonstrate excellence in aligning their mission with community needs, responsible resource management, transparency in operations, and creation of sustainable positive impacts.
“Winning the TRUST Award is really meaningful because as we do the work to create just, equitable and resilient communities where everyone can thrive, to be a trusted partner in that is huge,” said Dr. Pamela Luster, chair of the foundation’s Board of Governors. “We’re excited about the fundraising and friend-raising that we’re doing for our Fifty & Forward Campaign, but we’re even more excited about getting those resources out into the community to do the incredible work that needs to be done here.”
As part of the School of Leadership and Education Sciences at USD, the institute leads the TRUST Award evaluation process by focusing on key principles, including purpose-driven leadership, respect for the community ecosystem, pursuit of equity, a willingness to share power with impacted communities and excellence in fiduciary and strategic governance.
Other accolades handed out at USD’s annual Nonprofit Leadership Symposium went to MANA de San Diego, a nonprofit in the Latino community, which received the Kaleidoscope Award for Good Governance, and Paul Eichen and Susan Flieder, recognized with the Libby Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Leadership.
