Steve Smith has claimed that he is ready to take up the role as the captain of the Australian Cricket Team if Pat Cummins is unavailable. Cummins is currently an ankle injury and his participation in the ICC Champions Trophy is in major doubt. Stand-in captain, Steve Smith is now ready to take up the job of leading the Men in Yellow in the mega ICC event.
Previously coach Andrew McDonald claimed that both Steve Smith and Travis Head are shortlisted as candidates to captain the squad if Pat Cummins is unable to make a comeback. Cummins missed the Sri Lanka Test series owing to the birth of his second child. In the meantime, he is also recovering from an ankle injury.
“I haven’t given it too much thought. We will wait and see about that squad. I am focusing on the Test series. We want to win the series this time and then focus on ODI cricket. But I love captaining in these conditions, I understand the game well, the angles that need to be created, moving the pieces around the chessboard, it’s good fun. I have enjoyed it so far,” Steve Smith said.
Pat Cummins is yet to resume training or bowling in the nets. And with less than 2 weeks remaining for the mega tournament, his return seems unlikely. Ahead of the second Test against Sri Lanka, Smith said that he loves to captain the side when it tours the subcontinent. And thus captaining Australia in Pakistan won’t be much of a problem.
Back in 2022-23 in the Border Gavaskar Trophy when Australia toured India, Smith had captained the side in 2 Tests. And he has an unbeaten record. He won the third Test at Indore while the 4th Test at Ahmedabad was draw. However, it was India who won the series 2-1.
