Despite Lack of Offseason Moves, Padres Remain Optimistic

While some teams may look at the amount of spending other teams have done in the offseason and worry about what they have, the Padres are not in that group.

The team has confidence in themselves and the players on the team, as well as confidence in the organization as a whole.

Manager Mike Shildt and players spoke at the team’s FanFest at Petco Park Saturday, and they talked about how even though they lost some key contributors, the team is ready to get the season underway.

“We got a good nucleus of guys that compete and know what it takes to win,” Shildt said. “Yea, we got some guys that we miss. But that’s the nature of the game.”

Those “guys” Shildt referred to had key moments during their time in San Diego. Kyle Higashioka, who signed with the Rangers, had multiple postseason home runs last October. Jurickson Profar left for the Braves after his first ever All-Star selection with the Friars. Ha-Seong Kim bolted for a contract with the Rays, and Tanner Scott joined the reigning champions in Los Angeles.

Since players at key positions have left, Shildt and co. have to shuffle things around on defense.

Shildt spoke with Xander Bogaerts this offseason on a move back to shortstop, and Shildt said Bogaerts was enthusiastic about it. This would also help pave the way for Jake Cronenworth to move to second base.

The confidence within the leaders of the team goes up to the front office as well. Manny Machado said that he had trust in General Manager A.J. Preller when he signed with the Padres before the 2019 season, and that confidence remains.

“I know A.J. (Preller) is going to go out there and he’s going to put a very productive team out there,” Machado said.

Even with talent already out the door in free agency, the team still boasts plenty of former All-Star players, and Preller could make a deal at any time to boost an already strong roster.
