Buttler smashed 80 runs off 44 balls at the Rose Bowl to help England post a total of 254/4 in 20 overs. Jos Buttler went through his first 14 T20I innings of the year without scoring a half-century. During the 2026 T20 World Cup, he managed an average of only 8.85 across seven innings.
The 36-year-old has responded strongly in his last two T20Is, scoring 211 runs from 108 balls. He smashed 131 off 64 balls against India in July before following it up with 80 against Sri Lanka.
England captain Harry Brook praised Buttler after the match and said the veteran batter was beginning to find his best form again.
“Every time we've got a decent score, Jos has been there as well, and he's always been an amazing player for England, and he feels like he's just starting to hit his straps again and play some really good cricket. So that's really nice to see,” Brook said at the post-match presentation.
Buttler will now look to continue his strong run when England face Sri Lanka in the second T20I at Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Thursday, September 17. A victory would give England an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series, while another big knock would move Buttler closer to Babar Azam’s runs.
