The NBA World Reacts To The Luka Doncic & Anthony Davis Mega Trade

My brain is still broken. Eli’s brain is broken. Not just the entire NBA world, but the sports world as a whole appears to have had their brains broken.

Just about 12 hours ago, Shams Charania broke the news that made everyone think he got hacked – the Mavericks were sending Luka Doncic their 25-year old, All-NBA, MVP-Candidate superstar to the Lakers for Anthony Davis, Max Christie, and a first-round pick. The Los Angeles also added Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, and the Jazz were a third team involved and netted Jalen Hood-Schifino and a pair of second-round picks.

Usually after massive moves like this in sports, after taking a few hours to digest and let things settle in, the move starts to make more sense and you can start to grasp it a little better. I’ll be honest, 12 hours later, I’m still not totally grasping it and I still think it’s the most shocking trade in ANY sport I can recall, and one of the biggest gambles of all time by the Mavs.

Anyway, we’ll have more reaction to this throughout the week I’m sure, and the trade deadline is still a few days away so who knows what is still yet to come. As a reminder, the NBA trade deadline is on February 6th – this upcoming Thursday – at 2:00 PM CT.

Let’s take a look at some of the best social media reactions to this massive trade.

Excuse me…… They Did Not Just Trade Luka….

"Insane. It's crazy, crazy."Kevin Durant on mega Luka Doncic-Anthony Davis trade."Players are held to a different standard of loyalty and commitment to a program but the organizations don't get held to that same standard from the outside."On teams following suit before Feb.… pic.twitter.com/DekP4eRN6N

This might sound crazy to say … but could this end up being one of the worst trades in NBA history??How do you not get more for Luka? Why would you not at least try to see what else was out there? As great as AD is … Luka is worth so much more at 25 years old.

The interesting part will be seeing if Lebron’s influence will help Luka be in the best conditioning form of his life and for the rest of his career. Because of the way Lebron takes care of his body, Luka can learn from that a lot

The Luka Dončić-Anthony Davis trade is nearly impossible to translate into NFL terms, but one GM I just spoke with took a fun stab at it:“Imagine the Bengals shipping off Ja'Marr Chase to the Buccaneers for Mike Evans and a second-round pick.”

    — Jordan Schultz (@Schultz_Report) February 2, 2025

This Luka trade is the most insane, unexpected trade I have ever seen and there is no close second. Holy crap!!!

    — Field Yates (@FieldYates) February 2, 2025

Did the Mavericks even contact other teams to see what they could get for him? If getting a 32 year old Rudy Gobert cost the T Wolves 5 first and five players then I know a 25 year old Luka could’ve gotten Dallas more….Wow

    — Stacey King (@Stacey21King) February 2, 2025

Welcome to California Luka Doncic. In-N-Out is better than Whataburger.

    — In-N-Out Burger ᶠᵃⁿ (@innoutburger_) February 2, 2025

Luka getting traded from Dallas has to have a deeper story behind it. This just doesn’t happen on a random Saturday night.

The Mavs had major concerns about moving forward with Luka Doncic due to his constant conditioning issues and the looming commitment of another supermax contract extension this summer, sources told ESPN.

    — Tim MacMahon (@espn_macmahon) February 2, 2025

I've been covering the NBA for 37 years. Almost nothing that happens – deals, free agent signings, coach hirings/firings – rises to the level of, as the great Ben Bradlee used to call them, "Holy S–t" stories. You just get used to the unexpected. This is a "Holy S–t" trade.

    — David Aldridge (@davidaldridgedc) February 2, 2025

Luka Dončić did NOT request a trade, league sources tell @TheSteinLine. The Mavericks did this on their own accord, getting back Anthony Davis but only one future first-round pick from the Lakers in 2029 for a 25-year-old regarded as a future MVP.More NBA from me;… t.co/zL5E08wroD

    — Marc Stein (@TheSteinLine) February 2, 2025

The Lakers have only had one home-grown super star that they drafted themselves in the last FORTY years. It is kind of remarkable how well this team continually kickstarts new eras for themselves through trades rather than draft picks.

    — Brett Kollmann (@BrettKollmann) February 2, 2025

Mavs fans have to be so mad, and rightfully so.

    — Big Cat (@BarstoolBigCat) February 2, 2025

This is, obviously, wrong. There’s no NFL comp, but if one were forced to make one, here is the correct one:The Bills trading Josh Allen during the ‘22 season, the season after the :13 game, for Matt Stafford and a future 1st.Again, there’s no NFL comp, but this is closest. t.co/0RfUpZgKRi

Sample texts from NBA team execs: "This is the first time I've been legitimately shocked and could not move;"What a terrible deal" (no further clarification); and my favorite (among dozens in a similar vein) "What the f-ckity f-ck ?"

    — Zach Lowe (@ZachLowe_NBA) February 2, 2025

If the Mavs decided they suddenly didn't like Luka Doncic and didn't want to extend him, whateverThe best deal they could get in a league where teams spend years building up assets *praying* a scenario like this happens is 31-year-old Anthony Davis and a 2029 first-round pick?

    — Bill Barnwell (@billbarnwell) February 2, 2025

Luka is 25! The fact that the league is so shocked by this suggesting the Mavs didn’t hold a bidding war is simply organizational malpractice.AD is awesome but he’s a 31 year old big with injury history. Luka is 25!Luka is 25!This is insane. I won’t fall back asleep.

I don’t really watch or follow the NBA closely BUT, it seems like other teams may have offered even more for Luka and Dallas should have maybe called around a bit
