Cal State Fullerton done in by slow start in loss to Hawaii

HONOLULU — The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team fell behind by double digits early and never recovered in an 82-57 loss to Hawaii on Saturday night.

Fullerton, which is running out of time to position itself for a spot in the eight-team Big West Tournament in March, dropped to 6-17 overall and 1-10 in conference play. The Titans have lost three games in a row and eight of their past nine.

Fullerton scored the first basket of the game, then Hawaii went on a 15-0 run. The Rainbow Warriors, who abused the Titans in the paint and on the boards all night, built a 27-6 lead midway through the first half. Hawaii (13-9, 5-6 Big West) led 37-20 at halftime and by as much as 32 points in the second half.

Fullerton shot 36.5% from the field (19 for 52) and just 4 for 17 from 3-point range. The Warriors shot 44.3% (31 for 70) overall and 10 for 30 from behind the arc. Hawaii outrebounded the Titans 47-32, which contributed to a 40-22 advantage in points in the paint.

Donovan Oday led the Titans with 13 points (on 5-of-9 shooting) while grabbing six rebounds. Zion Richardson added 10 points, while Zach Visentin scored 10 points (on 4-of-7 shooting) off the bench.
