It’s been a couple weeks now, with a flurry of action in between, but it’s possible you remember that, when International Free Agency opened on January 15, the Cubs didn’t sign anyone. It was quite odd historically speaking, but easy enough to explain away because of the uncertainty the Roki Sasaki decision had introduced all over the market. Indeed, by the next day, the Cubs had signed most of their expected class.
I say most, though, because two of the more prominent projected signings weren’t included: Mexican righty Tadeo Gamez, who was reported by Baseball America as a likely part of the class, and Cuban shortstop Jaims Martinez, who was reported by Francys Romero as a likely part of the class. The fact that each prospect was coming from a country that may have differing timelines than the Dominican Republic, Venezuela, and Colombia could’ve been the issue. We don’t really know.
But we do know now that Gamez, at least, has finally signed, per Ben Badler:

— Ben Badler (@BenBadler) January 29, 2025Gamez came in for a call-out in the BA write-up about the Cubs’ class: “Mexican righthander Tadeo [Gamez] is an arm to watch in the class. At 5-foot-10, he’s not that tall, but he has stood out for his pitchability. He has a fast arm and a fastball that has been up to 94 mph.”
Gamez, who is just 16, actually appeared in a Mexican League game last year, which is pretty wild. I don’t know exactly what the circumstances were – was it just a scouting appearance? Was it so that the team that had his rights could get more in the IFA process? Was it a favor to someone? – but it’s just kind of a fun side note on the signing.
You can expect that Gamez, like other teenage IFA signings, will makes his organizational debut at the complex level, probably in the Dominican Summer League this year. But he’s still so young, and pitcher development at that age is such a careful process, that it’s possible we won’t see him at all this year in game action.
As for Martinez, there is still no word on his signing. The Cubs’ reported signing bonuses for this class already have them close to their fixed bonus pool allotment, so it’s at least possible that the Cubs have to acquire additional space before they can finalize the Martinez deal. I truly don’t know.
