Zach LaVine last competed – and won – the NBA’s Slam Dunk contest in 2016. But it might as well have been yesterday!
The Chicago Bulls’ two-time All-Star has looked as athletic as ever during his stellar 2024-25 campaign. One of the league’s elite shotmakers and transition threats, LaVine is putting together the most efficient scoring season of his career. The 29-year-old is averaging 24.0 points on 51.1 percent shooting from the field and 44.6 percent shooting from long range on 7.3 attempts a night. And, yes, he is still soaring for some jaw-dropping jams.
Just last week against the Los Angeles Clippers, LaVine found himself with an open lane on the fastbreak. Amir Coffey made a business decision and avoided the contest, leading to a huge tomahawk slam that even had Clippers fans jumping out of their seat.

Zach LaVine Turns Back the Clock
Matas Buzelis is set to become the first Chicago Bulls player since 2007 to compete at the NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest during this year’s All-Star Weekend (LaVine was with Minnesota when he won back-to-back titles). The rookie reportedly committed to the fan-favorite event earlier this month, and he is set to face off against a couple of other high-flying youngsters.
Fortunately for Buzelis, he has quite the teacher in his locker room, and it looks like LaVine has already started giving some lessons. In a video posted to his social media, LaVine shared a clip of him throwing down a ridiculous behind-the-back jam. The dunk is practically identical to the one he used to tip off his iconic 2016 dunk contest against Aaron Gordon.
What made the video even more fun was the loud scream of Buzelis who probably couldn’t believe his eyes. He immediately ran over to high-five the champ, who could be heard saying, “We still got it!”
