Donald Trump has signed his first piece of legislation since returning to the White House.
On Wednesday, the president signed the Laken Riley Act. The legislation requires the detention of unauthorised immigrants accused of theft and violent crimes.
The legislation is named after a 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by a Venezuelan man on the University of Georgia campus last February.
The man, Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan national in the US illegally was found guilty in November and sentenced to life without parole.

“To Laken’s family, we will keep Laken’s memory alive in our hearts forever,” he said.
“Her name will also live forever in the laws of our country. This is a very important law – it’s something that has bought Democrats and Republicans together.”
After the House passed the bill, House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said it was “the right thing to do.”
Some Democrats have questioned whether it is constitutional. Immigrant advocates are bracing for mass detentions that they say will mean costly construction of immigration lockup facilities to house the people arrested.
Trump also signed an executive order stating that Guantanamo Bay will detain an additional 30,000 “criminal illegal aliens”.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
