The County of Los Angeles Public Health Department has closed a stretch of beach – both the ocean and the sand areas – following concerns of fire debris runoff that can be toxic or contain carcinogenic chemicals.
The recent rainfall and the increase in fire debris along the ocean waters from Las Flores State Beach to Santa Monica State Beach prompted the closure, issued on Monday, Jan. 27.
“The closure will remain in effect until further notice,” health officials said in the announcement. “Beach users are cautioned to avoid water and sand contact.”
Already, late last week, the county had issued an ocean water quality advisory due to fire debris from the Palisades fire that scorched coastal areas. That advisory has been extended to at least Jan. 30 and includes Surfrider Beach to Las Flores State Beach and Santa Monica State Beach to Dockweiler State Beach at World Way.
“This includes any runoff that may flow onto or pond on the beach sand. Beach users are advised to stay away from any fire debris on the beach,” public health officials warn.
An overall ocean water quality rain advisory is also in place, also through Jan. 30, following the recent storm that passed through, because the falling water can flush pollutants from inland streets and storm drains to the ocean and can increase bacteria levels. Such advisories are typical following rainfall.
“Beach users are cautioned to avoid water contact for at least 72 hours after significant rainfall,” the rain advisory warns.
