NBA players were startled, to say the least, when an object fell from an arena’s scoreboard during the Minnesota Timberwolves-Atlanta Hawks game.
Luckily, no person was hurt as the malfunction was caught on live television on Monday night.
The first quarter came to a finish as the Timberwolves were up 28-20 at the Target Center in Minneapolis.
However, just as players began to walk to their respective benches after the buzzer, an apparent horn fell from the jumbotron.
The black piece of equipment hit the court and almost hit Minnesota star big man Rudy Gobert.
The 7-foot-1 center quickly stepped back after realizing the debris was just a few feet away from falling on him.
Then, Gobert’s teammate, Naz Reid looked up and was bewildered by the situation.
The whole sequence was caught on FanDuel Sports Network Midwest – the Timberwolves TV broadcast.
“Something just fell from the jumbotron,” broadcaster Michael Brady said.
“Man, it was within feet of Rudy Gobert.”
Fortunately, no one was injured and the game continued.
Gobert recorded 18 points and 10 rebounds as the Timberwolves won their third game in a row.
The three-time NBA All-Star was asked after the game if his life flashed before his eyes after the scary moment.
Gobert laughed and shared a simple answer with reporters.
“Yes,” the 32-year-old Frenchman said.
The hope is that nothing else will fall from the Timberwolves’ jumbotron.
The Target Center is expected to address the issue.
The Timberwolves unveiled their new jumbotron in 2016.
Each of the four main displays measures approximately 18 feet high and 33 feet wide.
The video boards were part of a $128.9 million Target Center renovation.
