Cubs Roster Move: Pressly Trade Official, Festa DFA’d

The Ryan Pressly trade is now officially official, announced today by the Chicago Cubs. The team is getting a veteran reliever with closing experience, as well as enough cash to bring his deal down to a below-market one-year, $8.5 million. In exchange, they give up pitching prospect Juan Bello, who had great success at Low-A this year, but on whom folks definitely disagree about future projections. The Cubs probably underpaid, so to speak, but with Pressly’s no-trade clause and the Astros’ deep desire to unload salary, the Cubs had quite a bit of leverage.

To open up a spot on the 40-man roster for Pressly, the Cubs designated reliever Matt Festa for assignment. Acquired earlier this month from the Rangers for cash (and roster-swapped with Miles Mastrobuoni), Festa is definitely the kind of interesting guy you’d like to see clear waivers and stay in your organization. Given that the Cubs had to jump the line and pay extra cash to get him, however, I’m not so sure there will be enough of a roster crunch around baseball for Festa to get through waivers. We’ll see.

The 40-man now stands at 40, with the Jon Berti signing yet to be made official.
