Bradley Beal Would Reportedly Veto A Trade to the Chicago Bulls

If the Chicago Bulls hoped to serve as a facilitator for a potential Jimmy Butler trade, things just got a lot harder.

After reports surfaced that the Bulls and Suns “discussed” a trade for Bradley Beal, which would pave the way for Phoenix to pursue Butler, Beal’s camp has reportedly stepped in. Fred Katz of The Athletic has reported that Beal would not waive his no-trade clause to join Chicago:

“Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal will not waive his no-trade clause to go to the Chicago Bulls, a source familiar with the three-time All-Star’s thinking told The Athletic.

There are destinations Beal would consider approving. As The Athletic reported last week, going to a winning team would be his first priority. However, cold-weather cities, including Chicago, are less attractive to him, the source said. If a team has a losing record and a chilly winter, it won’t be on Beal’s list. Of course, this complicates the Suns’ pursuit of Butler,” Katz wrote.

With how much noise the Beal-to-Chicago idea started to create, I assumed someone must have heard something about his willingness to go to the Bulls. Guess not!

The truth is that it always felt extremely unlikely that Beal would want to end up in the Windy City. If he is in control of his own destiny, why would he choose to leave a competitive environment for a rebuilding situation? Just because Mat Ishbia asked nicely?

It makes complete sense that Beal would rather stay in sunny Arizona than uproot his family less than two seasons after he made the move from the nation’s capital. Even if it’s seemingly clear the Suns don’t want him in town anymore, this is the power of a no-trade clause. Beal has complete control over the situation. And he appears ready to use it.

Indeed, this may tell us a lot about where these Jimmy Butler negotiations are heading. The Suns can not acquire the Miami Heat superstar without finding a new home for Beal. Considering his underwhelming play and roughly $111.0 million owed over the next two seasons, it’s hard to imagine any contender goes out of their way to add him. The much more likely situation has always been for a rebuilding team like the Bulls to eat Beal’s salary in return for future assets. If Beal isn’t willing to go to Chicago, however, why would he be willing to go to Charlotte or Toronto?

The chance of this mega-deal getting done feels VERY unlikely now. I’m not saying the Bulls were the only option, but this essentially suggests that Beal isn’t going to allow the Suns to salary dump him. Is it possible a contender suddenly emerges for Beal? Sure, but it’s incredibly hard to envision, particularly when we consider the finances at play.

To be clear, I’m sure this will not stop the Suns from trying to make something work. The organization has shown a willingness to be aggressive in the past. But I do wonder if some teams who were interested in getting in on the deal will begin to look elsewhere. The Feb. 6 deadline is just around the corner, and teams don’t want to waste time waiting around for something that may never hope.

Ps: Bradley Beal might be saving the Bulls from themselves. Even if he were to accept a potential trade to Chicago, there are several reasons why that move may not be in the Bulls’ interest. We talked a lot more about that here.
