San Diego County’s first significant rainstorm of the season brought totals Monday ranging from a quarter to half an inch near the coast to over an inch in the mountain slopes, according to the National Weather Service.

Overnight, isolated lightning strikes were reported, primarily over coastal waters and nearby land areas, but thunderstorm chances were expected to decrease by Monday morning.

However, the possibility of thunderstorms remains early in the week.

“Any thunderstorm will be accompanied by lightning and could contain locally gusty and erratic winds,” the NWS said. “No additional hazardous marine conditions are expected later today through Friday.”

Snow levels, which were near 3,500 to 4,000 feet early Monday, were forecast to rise to about 4,500 feet by the afternoon and fluctuate at that level through Wednesday.

A 15% chance of thunderstorms remained for county beaches through early Monday, with the possibility of cloud-to-ground lightning and brief gusty winds accompanying any storms that develop, according to forecasters.

Meanwhile, rising bacteria levels from the recent rains have prompted an advisory for all San Diego County beaches and bays, officials said.

Beachgoers were warned that rain can cause runoff which raises bacteria levels in ocean and bay waters, according to the San Diego County Department of Environmental Health and Quality, which issued a general health advisory on Monday.

“The general rain advisory for urban runoff contamination applies to beaches from San Onofre State Beach south to Border Field, including Mission Bay and San Diego Bay,” the department said.

“While many coastal outlets are posted with permanent metal warning signs, additional temporary signs are not posted for General Advisories.”

Swimming, surfing and diving should be avoided during rain and for at least 72 hours afterward, the department said.

City News Service contributed to this report. This story was updated with information about local beaches.
