This week, local government boards are devoting their attention to addressing longstanding issues. In Orange County, Hillsborough commissioners will tackle the town’s water and sewer system; Chapel Hill Town Council members will address affordable housing; and the Orange County school board will discuss safety concerns. Meanwhile in Durham, the school board is having to deal with two big issues at once: not only a multimillion-dollar budget shortfall, but also a still-ongoing bus driver shortage – which may take extra funds to resolve.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets at 7 p.m. Monday, January 27, with an agenda that includes an update on the town’s water and sewer system capacity, as well as a review of the town’s Community Reinvestment program. Click here for the full agenda.
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 29. Council members will consider authorizing the town manager to create a unified affordable housing program, and consider a permit request from UNC to build a training facility at Finley Golf Course. Get the full agenda here.
And the Orange County School Board meets in the Whitted Building at 7 p.m. Monday, January 27. Click here for the full agenda, which includes a possible update to the district’s strategic plan to improve school safety.
Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners have a special meeting at 6 p.m. Thursday, January 30. Their agenda is a short one: commissioners will appoint members for various state and regional boards, and hear a presentation on signs honoring acclaimed 19th-century poet George Moses Horton, who was enslaved in Chatham County prior to the Civil War. Durham County Commissioners meet at 7 p.m. Monday, January 27, with a light agenda that includes a resolution honoring longtime local advocate E. Lavonia Allison, who passed away earlier this month. Get the full agenda here.
