A University of Alabama student, a 31-year-old man and a dog were found deceased Monday at a home in the 12900 block of Alabama Junction Road in Brookwood.
The victims were identified as Jazmine Alexis Bates, a UA student, and Jose Felix Alvarez-Duenas, 31. According to investigators, both were shot and killed.
Bates, originally from Illinois, was 22 years old and a senior studying business administration and management. She had also worked as a server at Avenue Pub in Tuscaloosa.
Earlier that day, Brookwood Police were called to do a welfare check after the primary resident of that address, who was out of the country and had a friend housesitting, was not able to make contact with the friend between July 5 and July 6. The resident said that through her doorbell cameras, she saw a suspect on her back porch in the early morning on July 6. After the landlord requested a wellness check, police discovered the bodies of Alvarez-Duenas and Bates, as well as a deceased dog shot by the suspect.
The police said that the resident and the victims knew each other from their work at a local business.
The Brookwood Police Department operates as an independent police department within Brookwood, Alabama. Brookwood is a small municipality within the city limits of Tuscaloosa County. The case was assumed by the Tuscaloosa County Violent Crimes Unit, where the suspect was identified from video footage as De’Kendrick Crawford, age 24.
In May 2026, Crawford was terminated from a separate contractor job at the University. As he drove away, he “fired a firearm which struck an occupied office building adjacent to Coleman Coliseum,” according to the police report. He had an outstanding felony warrant for shooting into an occupied building and was actively evading law enforcement.
Following the killings, Crawford had another warrant out for capital murder. He was found hiding at a relative’s apartment in Northport along Deerfield Drive and was taken into custody about 10 hours after the victims’ bodies were discovered.
Capt. Jack Kennedy of the Violent Crimes Unit said there was no known motive for the murders.
“We don’t know why he targeted them. They were not doing anything wrong. They had done nothing wrong to him. None of his acquaintances know why this occurred,” Kennedy said.
“We extend our deepest sympathy to family and friends of Jazmine Bates after this tragedy,” the University said in a statement. “UA staff have contacted her family to offer support.”
