Sacramento city leaders will begin identifying areas to cut to solve budget deficit

SACRAMENTO – This week, Sacramento city leaders will begin a painful process of identifying what cuts they will be forced to make this year to solve another massive budget deficit. Last year, the city balanced a $66 million budget deficit without layoffs. This year the projected deficit is even bigger and Vice Mayor Karina Talamantes says no cuts are off the table.

"I think we're going in knowing that we're going to have to make tough choices," Talamantes said.

Talamantes is bracing for a battle ahead to get the city hall budget balanced with a projected deficit of $77 million. "No, the numbers won't be changing," Talamantes said. "If anything, we will be looking at a greater debt. Our sales tax coming in for the first quarter was just not looking as high as previous years."Talamantes and her fellow councilmembers begin their first steps in fixing the multi-million dollar deficit this week, looking at responses from community surveys that listed the top four budget priorities: homelessness, housing, fiscal sustainability and public safety.Respondents also listed top areas for cuts, with police and homeless programs leading the way.Last year, Sacramento city leaders slashed $66 million by increasing parking fees across the city, eliminating vacant positions and increasing fees for city programs and community center rentals. There were no layoffs. This year, the cuts will be deeper and worse.

The city budget and audit committee meets Tuesday for the first time. This year, the city will release its proposed budget cuts in April.
