Shafaq News/ On Sunday, the Colombian President, GustavoPetro, announced that his country will no longer permit US military aircraftcarrying deported migrants to land in Colombia.
President Petro wrote on the platform X, “Migrants are notcriminals and must be treated with the respect they deserve as human beings.”
Petro’s statement comes a day after the Brazilian governmentexpressed outrage over the treatment of dozens of Brazilian migrants deportedfrom the US, who were reportedly handcuffed during their flight—a practiceBrazil condemned as a “blatant disregard” for basic human rights.
A US official told Reuters that Colombia on Sunday refusedto allow two US military planes, each carrying about 80 deported migrants, toland. The flights had departed from California before being denied entry intoColombian airspace.
Notably, the Trump administration is implementing a seriesof strict new policies to accelerate deportations, granting Immigration andCustoms Enforcement (ICE) officers expanded powers to expedite removals, accordingto an internal Department of Homeland Security memo obtained by the New YorkTimes.
