A prime example of why people have lost respect in print media
With respect to the editorial from the Bangor Daily News printed in your paper Wednesday, a couple thoughts come to mind.
The observation that we don’t make America great by renaming a body of water (or a mountain, I might add) appears valid. Seems a bit juvenile.
The concern voiced that the adoption of a two-gender policy by the government would somehow be “backsliding” on civil rights is off-base. The argument can be made that, for example, preserving ladies’ rooms as a safe place for girls is an enhancement of, not a diminishing of, civil rights. We should keep in mind that what we are talking about here is a policy for the U.S. government. States, cities, municipalities, school districts or householders, for that matter, can adopt their own policies. If they do not accept monies from the U.S. taxpayers they are not affected by Washington’s policy. That is the stance of Hillsdale College, for example.
The editorial states, in part, “Trump reiterated many of his … lies about the 2020 election.” We all know that what makes a lie a lie is the intent to deceive. A good-faith belief in the thing asserted takes it out of the “deception arena.” The Bangor Daily News knows this, too. Their use of the word here is despicable and an affront to good journalism and also a prime example of the reasons the people they serve have lost so much respect for and faith in the print media.
The Bangor Daily News can do better.
