ROD LAVER ARENA — Novak Djokovic held his thumbs up to the crowd after being jeered off by some supporters at the Australian Open.
Djokovic, who suffered a groin injury during his quarter-final win over Carlos Alcaraz, lasted 81 minutes with heavy strapping on his left thigh, but retired from the match after losing the first-set tie-break.
Some fans on Rod Laver booed as he walked off the court and Djokovic stopped to hold two thumbs up to the crowd.
But his opponent Alexander Zverev, who is now into his third grand slam final and first at the Australian Open, implored the crowd not to disrespect Djokovic.
“Please, guys, don’t boo a player who leaves the court due to injury,” Zverev said.
“I know that everyone paid to be here and hopes to see a great five-set match. But you have to understand that Novak Djokovic has given his all to this sport for 20 years.”
He added: “There is no one I respect more on the tour than Novak. I have always been able to send him a message, call him when things were not going well.
“He has helped me a lot. Last year in Shanghai, when things were really not going well after the US Open, we talked for hours.”
