Cold weather advisory leads to late starts Tuesday in Weld County school districts

Several Weld County school districts announced delays to the school day on Tuesday due to extremely low wind chills and temperatures.

The National Weather Service placed portions of east central, north central, and northeast Colorado on a cold weather advisory from late Monday night until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Cold wind chills will reach as low as -25, which could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 15 to 30 minutes, according to the Weather Service.

All Greeley-Evans School District 6 schools including charter schools will operate on a two-hour delay, according to a notice on the district website.

District 6 will cancel morning preschool programs and all before-school activities, including sports practices and programs. The delay also means breakfast won’t be available to students and staff.

School dismal will remain on regular schedules.

“The safety of our students, staff, and families is our top priority, and we are taking this precaution to ensure everyone remains safe during the early-morning freezing cold temperatures,” the notice said.

The Weld RE-4 School District, serving Windsor, Severance and west Greeley, also has a two-hour delay in effect on Tuesday to keep students and staff safe, and give crews ample time to clear roads, parking lots and sidewalks, according to a district news release. All morning preschool classes and AlphaBEST programming are canceled, according to Weld RE-4.

The Weld RE-1 School District, which represents LaSalle, Gilcrest and Platteville, plans to delay school operations by two hours, according to a message sent out by Superintendent Kim Bloemen. School will start at 10 a.m. and end at the regular dismissal of 3:40 p.m.

The Weld RE-5J School District, serving Johnstown and Milliken, will start two hours late.

All Weld Re-8 schools in Fort Lupton will operate on a one-hour delay start.

Pawnee School District Re-12 in Grover has a two-hour late start in effect.

In the school districts with a delayed start, students riding the bus should arrive at their stops two hours later than their scheduled pickup times.

“We encourage all families to stay warm and take appropriate precautions during this time,” the District 6 notice said.
