The city of San Diego warned residents and visitors Wednesday to beware of a phishing scam involving fake parking citations.
Scammers are sending text messages that appear to be from the city about phony parking tickets with instructions to click a link to pay the fine online.
Anyone who receives the parking citation message in a text message is urged NOT to follow the links and to avoid entering credit card or payment information, and, instead, visit the city’s website or call the Parking Administration office at 866-470-1308.
The city’s cybersecurity team is working with the San Diego Police Department to shut down the fake website and find those responsible for the scam.
To verify the status of a parking ticket or safely make a payment online, go to sandiego.gov/parking/citations.
Community members are encouraged to remain vigilant regarding cybersecurity threats. More information is available at the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
