It will be the central node in the country’s comprehensive overhaul of its transportation system, called “Centralny Port Komunikacyjny” (CPK), which includes the new airport and some 2,000km of new high-speed rail lines.
CPK aims to put all of Poland’s large cities within 2.5 hours’ travel time to the new airport at Warsaw.
Created by Foster + Partners and Buro Happold, the airport’s design calls for a 400,000-sq-m international air terminal, an underground train station with six platforms, and a bus station.
The airport and rail hub will cover 2,585 hectares in the municipalities of Baranów, Teresin, and Wiskitki.
CPK said more than 90% of local property owners had already agreed to participate in its “voluntary acquisition programme”, which it called unprecedented in Poland.
“We wanted every family in the future investment area to receive an attractive offer for their property through the Voluntary Property Acquisition Programme,” said Dr Filip Czernicki, CEO of CPK.
He added: “The location decision ensures that the project is on schedule and enables CPK to soon start submitting building permit applications, with preparations already in full swing.”
