The curious case with Shubman Gill continues. After Rohit Sharma’s retirement from T20Is, he was appointed as vice-captain of the Indian Cricket Team in ODIs and T20Is. But now, after the Border Gavaskar Trophy, the team dynamics have been changed. Reports claim that Gill is no longer in contention to become vice-captain. Instead in Tests, either of Rishabh Pant or Yashasvi Jaiswal is deemed as the next deputy.
Former India cricketer Aakash Chopra has voiced his opinion on the matter. He has suggested for the upcoming IND vs ENG Tests, he wants Jasprit Bumrah to captain the side and either Yashasvi or Rishabh Pant can be the vice-captain. He further claimed that Shubman Gill’s stocks have dropped in leadership’s pecking order.
What went wrong with Shubman Gill?
Shubman Gill was announced as the white ball vice-captain as the team management decided to try out what the young batter could offer. It is needless to say Gill has his fine share of captaincy records under his belt. In the Indian Premier League (IPL), Gill captains Gujarat Titans and was primed to be the deputy of Team India across all three formats of the game.
“Everything looked fine. Shubman Gill was being made the vice-captain. He was regularly being assigned that role and then suddenly Shubman Gill was dropped. So pressure was put on him as to what was happening as he is potentially not coming in the captaincy thoughts and is not coming in the T20 format at all,” Aakash Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
Things took a wrong turn when Gill was dropped in the IND vs AUS Test series. He missed the opening game in Perth with an injury and was dropped on the Melbourne Test. Chopra then went on to explain that Gill is not coming in the T20 format anymore, and he was not selected for the IND vs ENG T20I series. But it can be understood that like other regulars, Gill has been rested after the BGT tour.
