North Weld County Water District raises rates by 5%

Residents of northern Weld County should expect an increase in their water bill as the North Weld County Water District raises their rates by 5% to fund this year’s projects and anticipated growth in the area.

The North Weld County Water District announced the rate increase for 2025 on Jan. 7, stating that the increase was “modest” compared to previous years and other water districts across the state.

In 2024, the district raised its rates by 7%, resulting in a monthly minimum cost of $28.50 if residents used less than 6,000 gallons and $4.75 for every 1,000 gallons if the amount used was higher than 6,000.

In 2025, those rates have increased to a minimum of $29.94 for usage under 6,000 gallons and a cost of $4.99 for every 1,000 gallons once above that 6,000-gallon mark. This rate increase is less than the 2025 rate increase from Denver Water, which is raising prices by $2 to $3 per month. However, Denver Water implements only a $19.06 minimum monthly cost.

Closer to the county, the Fort Collins-Loveland Water District implemented a new monthly cost of $23.22 which is a 30% increase from their 2024 rate of $17.86. The Fort Collins-Loveland Water district also has a lower range for their monthly minimums, where 5,000 gallons is the most that can be used before having additional costs.

North Weld said surging water costs across the nation due to stricter regulations and aging infrastructure led to the rate increase.

“The cost of clean water continues to increase, and maintaining our infrastructure requires responsible rate adjustments,” North Weld General Manager Eric Reckentine said in a news release.

In addition to keeping pace with the market, North Weld will use the increased revenue from this rate increase to fund several projects that will take place this year. These projects will help the district continue to provide a reliable water source for residents in Severance, Ault, Pierce and other northern Weld County communities.

One of these projects includes the completion of the Soldier Canyon Water Treatment Plant’s master plan and starting the design process for another expansion to the water treatment facility. Soldier Canyon recently completed an expansion to its filter plant in 2021. In 2024, the plant increased its capacity from 48 million to 68 million gallons a day.

Additionally, the water district will finalize both an agreement for additional capacity to Eaton and a property acquisition deal for their Weld County West Transmission Line. The transmission line will supply additional water to the west side of the county and include a new 7 million-gallon treated water tank.

Construction on the Weld County West Transmission Line is set to begin this year and will come with a price tag of $30 million.

“We are consistently thinking ahead to the future for our customers,” Reckentine said. “A stable revenue stream from water rates allows for proactive maintenance and upgrades to our water delivery system, allowing (North Weld) to replace aging infrastructure, meet new treatment standards, diversify supplies, and maintain a well-trained workforce.”

The new rates began on Jan. 1 and will be in place for the rest of the year or until further notice.
