Chicago Cubs Re-Sign Catcher Caleb Knight

The Chicago Cubs are bringing back some more catching depth for the farm system, having re-signed Caleb Knight to a minor league deal.

You may recall that Knight, who just turned 29, has been a catcher at various levels of the minor league system for parts of the last seven years. He gets into about 25 to 35 games per year, filling in wherever a catcher is needed. It is a thankless but necessary job, and one where a guy can assist with a whole lot of value and leadership and development for the guys around him, including the other catchers and the pitching staff. I don’t want to entirely rule out the possibility that he gets a cup in the big leagues if there is a series of injuries, but I also don’t know that he’d explicitly be viewed as “catching depth” in the way that we traditionally think about that role. Instead, Knight’s value is something a little different and more unique.

Then again, hey, if something were to happen to Carlos Perez (the veteran third catcher at Iowa), and if there were an injury to Miguel Amaya or Carson Kelly, it is at least conceivable that the Cubs would go with Knight for a brief fill-in rather than press Moises Ballesteros or Pablo Aliendo up to the big leagues if they aren’t ready. Other catching depth includes Casey Opitz and Miguel Pabon, who may be among the backstops at Double-A Knoxville this year.

You can tell how highly the Cubs think of Knight, by the way, because they added him to the 40-man roster briefly at the end of the season last year for a “call-up,” even though the regular season was over. It was part of a series of procedural moves, but a nice honorarium all the same.

And now Knight returns to the organization for another year as something of a player-coach hybrid, including all the work he no doubt puts in with pitchers in Arizona in the lead up to the season.
