Rewrite the Constitution?
With every cry for a rewrite of the U.S. Constitution comes speculation that cracks are undermining the foundation of our democratic republic. Would a rewrite or changes to the U.S. Constitution add stability or instability to our country? It was written with freedom, equality and justice as its central themes. Has it accomplished those ideals? It did not prevent American’s Civil War of the 1860s or an attempt to forcibly upset the transfer of power in 2021.
The author of that attempt will soon become president of the United State for the second time. His character is suspect. Both this nation’s allies and her enemies equate Trump’s character with the beliefs of her citizens. The electorate has made its decision. The overwhelming reason for those who voted for the winner of the last two elections has been, “I voted for him or her because I feared the other candidate.” Insecurity is the root of fear, and until we trust in a process that has survived for almost 240 years, insecurity will grow.
President-elect Trump’s behavior magnifies his indifference to the rest of the world. As many other democratic republics overseas begin to question their political models, I ask you: Will our pluralistic model falter? I am concerned that an isolationist policy by the U.S. is not in our best interest at this time. Finally, seeking retribution is counterproductive to a message of unity proposed by president-elect Trump in his return to power on January 20, 2025.
Will 2025 bring back a recurrence of responsible government? We are living under the U.S. Constitution. We elect our representatives and ask them to swear an oath to this document. Why would President-elect Trump ask us to change it? If it is decided to make changes to the U.S. Constitution, you and I are the ones to ratify it, not an executive order.
