This would’ve been a very good signing for the Chicago Cubs. Sensibly-priced given the talent and market, and a pretty critical need.
But the Cubs of the current front office simply DO NOT give out reliever contracts like this:
OFFICIAL: We’ve signed All-Star RHP Jeff Hoffman to a 3-year deal ⭐️Welcome Back, @Hoff_23! pic.twitter.com/A1tN8zOGjV
— Toronto Blue Jays (@BlueJays) January 11, 2025Hoffman gets $33 million, sources say. The deal has incentives that could take it to $39 million. t.co/G3OBO8lnUD
— Robert Murray (@ByRobertMurray) January 11, 2025On the same day that the Cubs chose to guarantee $5 million to Colin Rea, the Blue Jays are getting an elite back-end reliever for a little over twice that amount in 2025. I don’t get the math there – even on a multi-year deal – but I suppose the Cubs must really like the idea of spreading around their innings this year (and Rea isn’t BAD, mind you).
I think we can continue to safely assume that if and when the Cubs add in the bullpen, they’ll wait until they can get a guy on their terms, a la Hector Neris last year. That time certainly didn’t work out, but I suppose other times it has. A lot of arms out there still, so I’m not freaking yet. I just don’t love passing on Hoffman at this price.
