This would’ve been a very good signing for the Chicago Cubs. Sensibly-priced given the talent and market, and a pretty critical need.
But the Cubs of the current front office simply DO NOT give out reliever contracts like this:

I don’t get the math there – even on a multi-year deal – but I suppose the Cubs must really like the idea of spreading around their innings this year (and Rea isn’t BAD, mind you).
I think we can continue to safely assume that if and when the Cubs add in the bullpen, they’ll wait until they can get a guy on their terms, a la Hector Neris last year. That time certainly didn’t work out, but I suppose other times it has. A lot of arms out there still, so I’m not freaking yet. I just don’t love passing on Hoffman at this price.
