Train service, including for the Coaster, Amtrak and Metrolink rails, is being suspended this weekend between Oceanside and downtown San Diego because of track work, Amtrak and the North County Transit District announced Friday.
There will be no special bus service to replace the Pacific Surfliner between the two stations, Amtrak said.
The service suspension will force automobile-deprived travelers to seek other means to trek between San Diego and Los Angeles. FlixBus and Greyhound provide multiple trips a day from either San Diego’s Old Town or La Jolla to L.A.’stimes Union Station.
In San Diego, the move is prompted by the need to continue work to stabilize the Del Mar bluffs. But that’s not the only reason. The two-day closure will also allow for work on the track bed, crossing and signals and other projects in Orange County.
Although Amtrak has warned passengers to be on the lookout for advisories about possible delays or service interruptions in Southern California because of high winds, which have driven the disastrous fires in Los Angeles and Altadena, there were no wind-related advisories posted as of Friday morning.
Another round of rail service suspensions is planned for Jan. 25-26.
