A former U.S. Postal Service supervisor and his son who conspired to cash out $5.1 million from stolen postal money orders each will serve prison stints.
Dewayne Morris Sr., 65, and Dewayne Morris Jr., 41, both of Inglewood, were sentenced in San Diego federal court Wednesday – Morris Sr. to seven years and Morris Jr. to more than 12 years in prison.
They were charged with using the stolen money orders to open bank accounts, withdraw cash and spend the money on major purchases such as cars and vacations, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
More than 5,000 money orders were taken from Los Angeles-area post offices where Dewayne Morris Sr. worked, according to prosecutors.
The Morrises were convicted last year by a San Diego jury of conspiracy and bank fraud. Morris Jr. also was convicted of witness tampering.
Trial evidence included bank records showing Morris Jr. deposited more than $2 million in cash into his bank accounts over the course of the conspiracy.
He also paid for luxury cars, including a new Mercedes-Benz AMG GT, and extravagant vacations. For example, Morris Jr. paid for their three trips — in a span of just 10 weeks — to Costa Rica, Grand Cayman and Los Cabos, Mexico, including stays at a Four Seasons Resort and a Ritz-Carlton.
Prosecutors say Dewayne Morris Jr. threatened a witness and tried to persuade the person to deny in a recording that Morris Jr. gave him money orders.
Eight other defendants have been sentenced in the case.
The Los Angeles Times reported that the late Darius Morris, a former Laker and Clipper who died in May, was the son and brother of the defendants. An attorney for Morris Jr. said Darius Morris had “no involvement whatsoever” in his loved ones’ crimes.
