January 4,2025 (KHARTOUM BAHRI) – Sudan’s military intelligence has detained an aid worker in the Bahri area north of Khartoum, a local emergency response group said on Saturday. Abeer Mohamed Fadl al-Sid was arrested in December while working in shelters in Samrab, the Samrab Emergency Room said in a statement. The army took control of the area from the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in December after heavy fighting. The emergency room condemned the arrest as “a blatant violation of human rights and a clear escalation in the suppression of humanitarian workers”. It said Fadl al-Sid was one of the first to volunteer to help those displaced by the conflict that erupted in April 2023 and had been running communal kitchens and providing food and other assistance. The group called for her immediate release and urged the international community and human rights groups to pressure Sudan to end arbitrary arrests of aid workers. “It is essential to protect humanitarian volunteers who face increasing risks due to performing their humanitarian duty,” the statement said.
