The Blue Sona microphone redefines broadcast audio with cutting-edge features, a user-friendly design, and exceptional sound quality.
buy from amazonOne of the more underrated devices in a desk setup is the microphone. To me, it’s incredibly important because I not only use it for voice over work, but I also utilize it when using functions like Dictation and Siri commands. For many years, I had the Rode Podcaster Dynamic USB Microphone installed in my workstation. It worked functionally well but I didn’t like how I sounded in recordings. Technically, there was nothing wrong with the microphone. I just wanted something that sounded deeper.
So, I graduated to the Shure SM7B, which is one of the more popular choices among podcasters. This was a HUGE step up for me and I was finally getting that broadcast quality sound I was looking for. The only hiccup with this microphone is that it does not have an integrated preamp. So, you have to include something like the Coda MB-1 Preamp along with your SM7B. My complete set up ended up including the following devices.
While this setup has served me very well, I felt the need to downsize my setup a bit and see if I could find a broadcast-quality USB microphone like the Shure SM7B that didn’t require the added preamp. This is what led me to find the Logitech Blue Sona.

User Experience
Getting the Blue Sona integrated into my setup was very easy since I was swapping out microphones — one for the other. If I was started from scratch, there would have been a little more installation required, but since I already had the Shure microphone, all I did was remove the preamp from the system and connected the XLR cable directly between the Focusrite USB Audio Interface and the microphone. The Blue Sona also comes with a built-in mount that is designed to screw into a stand or arm. So, I attached the microphone to the Elgato Wave arm and plugged in the cable. The Blue Sona has a plug-and-play setup so while you can fine tune its audio levels with software, it’s not necessary and the mic can be used as soon as it’s connected.
Since I’ve had it installed I’ve noticed that the microphone picks up audio signals quite easily — as long as it’s pointed at you. I keep the mic arm folded and off to the side of my desk unless I’m recording voiceover audio. The microphone will still pick up my voice commands for Siri and Dictation in this offset position. I’ve found that if the mic is pointed towards me, then it’s much more accurate.
When it comes to audio quality, I’ve found that it is comparable to what I was getting with the Shure microphone. The Blue Sona does a great job with recording louder audio sources without distorting the signal. It delivers a very balanced sound. I’ve also noticed that since it is as a built-in preamp, the Blue Sona is less gain hungry than the Shure. I’ve been very impressed with the quality of the recordings and the professional-grade experience I’ve gotten with the Logitech microphone.
Conclusion
The Logitech Blue Sona Active Dynamic XLR Broadcast Microphone is an outstanding choice for professionals and enthusiasts seeking a balance of exceptional audio quality, ease of use, and aesthetic design. By combining ClearAmp Technology, a super-cardioid pickup pattern, and rugged construction, Logitech has delivered a microphone that is both user-friendly and performance-driven. Whether you’re recording voiceovers, podcasting, or using voice commands, the Blue Sona provides versatility and quality, all without requiring a separate preamp.
