Sir-Prize! Celebrating Paul McCartney’s 84th

Celebrating Sir Paul McCartney’s 84th birthday, acclaimed guitarist Fred Benedetti returns to Dizzy’s for an evening of the classic songs from throughout Macca’s 60 years in music, including music from The Beatles, Wings and his solo career. Joined by an ensemble that includes vocalists Regina Moomjean and Julia Picone, multi-instrumentalist/bassist Jeff Pekarek, and percussionist James Morton, Benedetti is a wizard on all manner of stringed instruments, recasting songs such as “Blackbird,” “Let It Be,” or “Band on the Run,” with inspired new arrangements that spotlight Benedetti’s virtuoso playing on anything from ukulele to baritone guitar.

The Benedetti Ensemble Celebrates Paul McCartney: Friday, June 26 at Dizzy’s at Arias Hall, 1717 Morena Blvd. 7:30 p.m. $20.

Rose Mallet brings the Sinatra-era Balladry

Singer Rose Mallett performs at the La Jolla Community Center on June 26 as part of the Fourth Friday Jazz Concert series. Mallet has a wonderful voice. As heard on her latest album, “Dreams Realized,” she’s at home with heartfelt standards such as “It’s Impossible” and “Send In The Clowns,” as well as more uptempo, bluesier fare, like “Rock Me Baby” and “The Snake.” For this show, Mallet will be accompanied by Melonie Grinnell (piano) and Rob Thorsen (double bass). Anyone who appreciates Sinatra-era balladry or classic jazz sounds will find this show to be an excellent way to spend a Friday evening.

Rose Mallett: Friday, June 26 at the La Jolla Community Center, 6811 La Jolla Blvd. 8 p.m. $35.

    Rookie Card bids farewell

Playing their penultimate show, long-running indie rock combo Rookie Card, prepares to say goodbye after 25 years with a special show at the Vinyl Junkies record shop. Helmed by Adam Gimbel, with Andrew McNally (drums), Dylan Martinez (guitar) and Kevin Gossett (bass), Rookie Card excels at humor-tinted, hook filled tunes, as heard on their recent Padres dedicated single, “The Murph.” The band will be performing outdoors in the parking area adjacent to Vinyl Junkies, with the outdoor patio area of The Whistle Stop bar across the street serving as a good vantage point.

Rookie Card: Saturday, June 27, at Vinyl Junkies, 2235 Fern St, 6 p.m. Free.

    Missing Persons have been found

80’s new wave favorites, Missing Persons, perform at The Belly Up on June 27. Still led by singer Dale Bozzio, the band now also includes another well-known musician, bassist Prescott Niles of powerpop icons, The Knack. The band’s latest album, “Hollywood Lie,” includes some good tunes, such as the single, “Ice Blue Eyes”, however fans will be happy to note that the bands current set list is built around their greatest hits, including “Destination Unknown,” “Mental Hopscotch” and “Walking in L.A.” Opening the night will be fellow 80’s combo, Bow Wow Wow, featuring original vocalist Annabella Lwin.

Missing Persons: Saturday, June 27 at The Belly Up Tavern, 143 S. Cedros Avenue. 8 p.m. $36.

OB takes it to the streets

Attendees at this year’s Ocean Beach Street Fair on June 27 will find plenty of indoor musical activity in addition to the two outdoor stages. Kicking off at 3 p.m., Winston’s will feature music from Darbuka Denn, Arcadia, Brian Jones Rock-n-Roll Revival and the Rolling Back Outs, with late-night, post-fair sets from King Tide and Gunner Gunner. All are well worth hearing, but Brian Jones and company’s classic barroom rock ‘n’ roll, featuring tunes from The Stones, Hendrix and blues favorites, is a particular standout, which will likely have crowds dancing both inside and on the sidewalk outside the venue.

OB Street Fair with Music all Day: Saturday, June 27 at Winston’s, 1921 Bacon Street, 3 p.m. No Cover.

    A fair alternative

The Holding Company will also be holding a free OB Street Fair adjacent night of music on June 27. It all kicks off at 6 p.m. with a set from rootsy rockers Nick Bone & The Big Scene, followed by world punk combo Quel Bordel. The latter is a lot of fun. Mixing gypsy fiddle and folk-inspired melodies with punk rock energy, Quel Bordel has several recordings available, but this is a group that you need to experience live, where their manic energy is on full display. A great way to wrap up a long day at the street fair.

Quel Bordel: Saturday, June 27 at The Holding Company, 5046 Newport Ave, 6 p.m. No Cover.

Sue Palmer brings some noise to the library

A quiet library might not seem like the optimal place to hear music, but that’s certainly not the case with the Pacific Beach Library, which hosts a monthly concert series. On June 27, the PB Library hosts a performance from the Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sue Palmer and vocalist Liz Ajuzie. The latter is blessed with a wonderful voice, but Palmer is truly a wonder, with a terrific stage presence and a deep catalog of songs both old and new. Palmer’s latest album, “Eight to the Bar!,” took home this year’s San Diego Music Award for Best Local Recording, a fitting honor for one of our town’s musical treasures.

Sue Palmer & Liz Ajuzie: Saturday, June 27, at the Pacific Beach Library, 4275 Cass Street. 4 p.m. Free.

Folk jazz duo comes to Athenaeum

Temecula-based acoustic folk jazz duo Nathan Rivera (accordion, etc.) and Jessie Andra Smith (guitar) come to Athenaeum for a show on June 29, part of the venue’s free, weekly lunchtime concert series. With music that touches on folk, vintage pop, blues, Spanish norteno rhythms, and New Orleans-style jazz, the pair is currently touring in support of their latest album, “Guest In The City.” It’s a wonderful showcase for Nathan & Jessie’s harmonies and songs. Anyone who appreciates artists such as Robin Henkel, Squirrel Nut Zippers, or Nathan James will be clapping along to Nathan & Jessie’s infectious tunes.

Nathan & Jessie: Monday, June 29 at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library, 1008 Wall St. Noon. Free.

Anna Ballew is bringing it home at the Casbah

On June 30, singer-songwriter Anna Ballew hosts a combination homecoming/release show for her debut album, “Bloom,” at The Casbah. Produced by Grammy-winner Alan Sanderson (The Rolling Stones, Weezer), as heard on the just-released title track, Ballew’s latest does a great job of capturing her wistful, soulful vocals and jazzy, R&B-tinged originals. This show wraps up a month of touring the Southwest for Ballew, so she and her accompanying musicians will be at the top of their game for this show. Ballew is still fairly new to our music community, but based on her latest recordings, it’s easy to see she’s poised for big things ahead.

Anna Ballew: Tuesday, June 30 at The Casbah, 2501 Kettner Blvd. 7:30 p.m. $16.

Dark Chisme at the Music Box

Seattle-based duo Dark Chisme performs at Music Box on July 01. Gloomy and mysterious sounding, singing in both English and Spanish, and wholly original, fans of 80’s era combos such as Siouxsie & The Banshees, early Human League, and other post punk dark wave groups will love Dark Chisme’s sound, with tracks such as “Yo Puedo Vivir Sin Ti,” slotting well amongst songs from their musical inspirations.

Dark Chisme: Wednesday, July 01, at Music Box, 1337 India Street. 7:30 p.m. $24.
