(CNN) — Azerbaijan Airlines, the carrier of the passenger jet that crashed in Kazakhstan on Christmas Day, said preliminary investigations have found the disaster occurred “as a result of physical and technical external interference,” according to Azerbaijan’s state news agency AZERTAC.
A US official told CNN on Thursday that early indications suggest a Russian anti-aircraft system may have downed the passenger jet.
At least 38 of the 67 people on board the plane were killed in the crash, Kazakh authorities confirmed, including two pilots and a flight attendant.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
