Weld RE-5J board asks for handful of revisions to lease agreement with Glenn A. Jones Memorial Library

The Weld RE-5J Board of Education approved an agreement to lease half the intermediate elementary school building out to Glenn A. Jones M.D. Memorial Library but requested further revisions before anything is finalized.

The board discussed the Glenn A. Jones M.D. Memorial Library lease agreement for more than an hour in an executive session Friday afternoon. Monica Johnson, the board secretary, excused herself from the conversation due to a conflict of interest.

During the session, board members conferred with the district’s legal counsel about the lease opportunity, according to Board President Michael Wailes.

The district approved the agreement “in the form presented” but encountered a few items that require further revisions, including parking, utilities, snow removal and renovations.

“I think we left that executive session feeling comfortable that that is something we can work out with the library administration and the school district’s administration,” Wailes said. “We don’t need to have such an active role in it any further.”

Over the past few years, the district has explored methods to tackle increasing enrollment while buildings reach capacity limits.

When Weld RE-5J leaders decided to move the middle school into the former Roosevelt High School building, starting in January, the unused Roosevelt Middle School space created a financial and strategic opportunity to split up Milliken elementary students.

The middle school building will host intermediate elementary students, grades 3-5, from Milliken Elementary School for the 2025-26 school year. Preschool through second grade students will stay put at the current elementary school building as Milliken Primary School.

Milliken Intermediate School will only use half of the building to leave space for growth. Until then, the district pursued a partnership with the Glenn A. Jones M.D. Memorial Library to contract out the space.

District officials believe the opportunity could greatly benefit students by giving them weekly, educational in-house field trips to the library.
