Blackhawks 3, Wild 4 — Three Stars, Key Takeaways

The Blackhawks got off to a sloppy start but got bailed out by a challenge when it appeared Minnesota scored three minutes into the game. Less than four minutes later, the Hawks got on the board first for the 22nd time this season. Unfortunately, Seth Jones left his spot to hit a Wild skater in front of the net 11 minutes in and left Kirill Kaprizov all alone on the back door for an easy tap in when a loose puck found him. And the game was tied. That’s where the first 20 minutes ended with Minnesota holding a 13-11 shot advantage.

The Blackhawks were able to take a 2-1 lead on Nick Foligno‘s eighth of the season early in the second, but… allowed a game-tying goal 49 seconds later. The Blackhawks played a much better team game after Minnesota’s second goal. The second period ended with the game tied at two and Chicago holding a 21-20 shot advantage.

The Wild took a 3-2 lead early in the third. Jones was tied up with Marcus Foligno in front of the net and the goalie never saw it. Brock Faber was credited with the goal. Minnesota’s Foligno scored into the empty net late in the game to add some insurance.

    Star 1: Connor Bedard

Ironically, it was a faceoff that Bedard should have won that ended up in a loss that turned into the first goal of the game. He was one of four Blackhawks skaters with two shots on net in the first period. He got a little chippy with Marco Rossi during the second period.

    Star 2: Frank Nazar

According to Natural Stat Trick, the Blackhawks’ best line in the first period was the second line. Nazar had a great scoring chance off a rush in the first. He had another great chance in the second, and Foligno was on the doorstep to deposit the loose change. Nazar picked up his first career assist on the goal. That line was the Blackhawks’ best thru two periods; Nazar has the team’s best Shots For percentage (10 for, 3 against). Nazar had a team-high five shot attempts thru two periods.

    Star 3: Jason Dickinson

Without Joel Eriksson Ek in the Minnesota lineup, the Blackhawks figured to have an advantage at the dot and did well in the first. The Blackhawks won 9 of 14 faceoffs in the first period, led by 3 of 4 from Dickinson. Dickinson won 7 of 9 faceoffs thru two periods and was credited with a team-leading four hits. He scored the Blackhawks’ third goal with 32 seconds left in regulation and finished the night winning 9 of 11 faceoffs and with a team-high five hits.

    Key Takeaways

Arvid Söderblom was tested in the first period and did very well. He was equally good in the second period to keep the game tied at two. Connor Murphy had another busy first period. He was credited with two blocked shots, two hits and one takeaway in 6:55. Jones was not good in this game, and got exposed a few times after Minnesota’s third goal gambling for a puck and leaving multiple Wild skaters behind him. Joey Anderson barely got on the ice tonight (5:12).
