December 23, 2024 (KHARTOUM BAHRI) – The Sudanese army advanced further into central Khartoum Bahri on Monday, reaching the Shambat district from the east, near the main fruit and vegetable market, military sources said. Earlier this week, the army reached the northeastern edge of Shambat, advancing from Halfaya north of Khartoum Bahri. They captured buildings of Al-Mashreq University and the Hijaz area, which Rapid Support Forces (RSF) fighters had used as sniper positions. The army reached “Laffa Square 15”, the Weta grain mills east of the central market, and police towers, the sources told Sudan Tribune. RSF fighters were still holding the police towers, a complex of five towers with basements, while the army besieged the location, the sources said. The Revolutionary Brigades, a pro-army militia, said in a statement that the army and allied forces had taken control of Al-Baraha Hospital, Shambat Square 15, and the Weta mills. The statement added that the army in Shambat was now about 6 km (4 miles) from the Signals Corps base in southern Khartoum Bahri and about 8 km from the army’s general command in central Khartoum.
