BREAKING: Cody Bellinger Traded to the Yankees (UPDATE) ...Middle East

There have been some expected moves over the years, and maybe this isn’t THE most expected move ever, but, as far as trades and big names go, this has to be one of the most heavily telegraphed. Cody Bellinger is being traded to the New York Yankees.

That, per Jeff Passan:

BREAKING: OF/1B Cody Bellinger has been traded from the Chicago Cubs to the New York Yankees, sources tell ESPN. Bellinger, 29, is a former MVP and has two years remaining on his contract with an opt-out after 2025. Yankees continue to be aggressive post-Juan Soto.

In a rumor that actually goes as far back as the 2023 Trade Deadline, the Cubs and Yankees finally get together on a deal that made way, way too much sense not to happen, particularly after the Cubs landed right fielder Kyle Tucker.

UPDATE: The trade return is … underwhelming:

Full trade, per ESPN sources: Cody Bellinger and cash go to the New York Yankees, right-handed reliever Cody Poteet goes to the Chicago Cubs.

So the Cubs had to eat salary to land a guy who was a reclamation pitcher for the Yankees last year? Woooooof. That’s an absolute and complete salary dump trade.

I don’t want to completely ignore the fact that Poteet may have real value. Because he’s still a pre-arb pitcher who has had some big league success as a reliever and as a starter, and he has minor league options remaining. This is a guy you’re happy to have, in the abstract. It’s just that, Bellinger plus cash would seem to have more value than that.

The Cubs must really, really like Poteet as a guy they think can contribute. We’ll have much more on him soon. Stats via FanGraphs:

So both sides get to claim victory now – Cubs eat only $5M instead of $10M, Yankees send a reclamation-adjacent swing pitcher.
