It’s a game-day Monday for the Chicago Bears. Are you ready for some football?
The Bears enter Week 15 with nothing more to play for other than pride and development after being officially eliminated from postseason contention on Sunday afternoon when the Commanders beat the Saints. I have been trying to unpack the reality that the Bears were set to miss the playoffs for the sixth time in eight years that we have been together as a site for a few weeks. It’s not as easy as you might otherwise believe it would be. Ultimately, I found myself landing here: The conservative-by-nature projection modules that are soulless and bias-free spit out a modest uptick in results (many of them had this team around 9 wins) that these Bears still fell woefully short of reaching. A failure to clear such a low bar is damning on so many levels. Everyone at Halas Hall (players, coaches, staffers, management, ownership) needs to do some real soul-searching. I realize that self-awareness and self-assessment aren’t everyone’s thing, but this franchise needs to get its act together and figure it out. And it needs to do so by starting from within because I’ve had it up to here with the finger-pointing. Maybe I’ll die alone on this hill. And if I do, I can do so knowing I had a heckuva run. But I still stand on the preseason buzz being justified. This wasn’t created out of thin air. Reasonable, respected, level-headed thinkers (in addition to the soulless computers) were projecting improvement by the Bears based on the additions they made this offseason. That smarter people than yours truly saw the arrow for this squad pointing up makes its failures in 2024 hurt that much more. For me, the shortcomings are an indication of how important coaching and preparedness for the moment matters.BN ON BLUESKY: Bears … Cubs … Bulls … Blackhawks
